Box Score Volleyball Sweeps South Carolina State More Information:
CONWAY, S.C.-The Coastal Carolina Volleyball team improved to 5-13 on the season after defeating South Carolina State in three games, 30-24, 30-18, 30-24 Tuesday, October 3 in Kimbel Arena.
South Carolina State took the early lead 10-4 until Coastal Carolina's Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) and Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) had a huge block to change the pace of the game. Tracey and junior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) served for a combined 11 points, helping the Lady Chanticleers take the lead. Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Andover Central) exploded for six kills in the 30-24 win, while Thompson added three. For South Carolina, Lillianana Gootinag put down four balls. Coastal hit for .135 on 15 kills with two blocks and the Lady Bulldogs hit .116 on 12 kills.
In game two, the Lady Bulldogs matched Coastal point-for-point until kills from Tracey and senior Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) put the Lady Chanticleers in front 12-8. Coastal never looked back taking advantage of seven Lady Bulldog errors, a big-time block from Nyhof and solid performances from Scheible and Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills). Scheible tallied three kills with Rinne, Tracey and Nyhof each putting down two. Coastal hit for .172 while South Carolina State had a zero hitting percentage and three players hitting in the negatives.
Coastal again came from behind to win game three 30-24. South Carolina jumped out with the early 10-6 lead on kills from Gisela Kloss and Laura Waters-Brown. Coastal took over with Rinne serving five unanswered points. The Lady Bulldogs didn't stay far behind scoring off of two kills from Waters-Brown and Vicky Jeter and a Monique Walker ace, keeping it close at 16-16. Thompson then took charge and ran away with the lead serving five points and taking advantage of four South Carolina State attack errors. Three Lady Chanticleers had two kills in game three, Tracey, Rinne and Wolf. Coastal hit for .061 against South Carolina State's negative .093.
Coastal was led by Wolf who ended the night with nine kills and six digs. Rinne tallied six kills with ten digs and was one of four Lady Chants to have double digits in digs. Thompson scooped up thirteen balls, Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville) had 11 digs and Tracey saved ten. Tracey also had 24 assists. The Lady Bulldogs were led by Gootinag and Waters-Brown who each had seven kills on the night.
As a team, Coastal hit for .123 on 33 kills with a total 11 blocks, Nyhof led the blocking with six assisted blocks and two solo blocks. The Lady Bulldogs hit .008 on 32 kills and only had one block.
South Carolina State returns to action Saturday, October 7 when they travel to Norfolk State. The Lady Chanticleers head to Virginia as well to meet Liberty on Friday October 6 at 7 p.m. and Radford on Saturday October 7 at 2 p.m.
