Box Score Volleyball Picks up Huge Win Against College of Charleston Three Lady Chanticleers have double digit night in kills

CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina Volleyball team (7-21) defeated non-conference College of Charleston (18-7) in a thrilling five-game match Friday night in Kimbel Arena becoming the only Big South team to defeat the Lady Cougars this season. CofC swept Big South first place Winthrop earlier in the season. The game scores were 30-28, 23-30, 29-31, 30-28 and 15-12.
Game one was a constant battle for the lead having 15 tie scores and six lead changes throughout the duration. Despite a six-kill effort from Emily Sawin the College of Charleston couldn't stop the firing arms of Coastal. The Lady Chanticleers took advantage of eight Lady Cougar errors and four kills apiece from freshman Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy). College of Charleston got a big kill from Sawin after a Lady Cougar time-out to pull within one 29-28 but lost the game on an attack error.
The second game was dominated by the Lady Cougars who hit for .208 in the 30-23 victory. College of Charleston took the early 9-4 lead before senior Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) served for six unanswered points. The game remained tied until two consecutive kills from Annie Uthe and one from Sawin forced a Coastal time-out at 24-21. Despite two solid kills from senior Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) the Lady Chanticleers hurt themselves with three errors after the time-out forcing the loss. Nyhof and Scheible each had three kills in the effort while CofC was led by Uthe who put down six.
Game three was much like the first, having 11 tie scores and six lead changes. CofC jumped out to an early 14-7 lead off of the strong serving arms of Sawin and Marie Dobrenz. After a Coastal time-out, the Lady Chanticleers responded with an 8-3 run taking the lead at 20-17. The two teams again matched each other point-for-point until the Lady Cougars pulled away off of two Sarah Voss kills and one from Sawin to win the game 31-29.
Coastal came out with a vengeance in game four taking the early 13-9 lead off of four Lady Cougar attack errors. However, it wasn't long until CofC's offense answered back, taking advantage of several Lady Chanticleer attack errors and clutch kills from Uthe and Deanna Patrick to put the score at 20-19. The two teams answered each other point-for-point until Coastal got a huge block from Obert and setter Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) forcing CofC to take a time-out. Coastal then got kills from Nyhof, Rinne and junior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) to take the game 30-28. Patrick exploded for 11 kills in the Lady Cougar loss, Coastal's Nyhof tallied five.
The two teams made gave five a thrilling one, answering each point scored until a solo block from Obert forced a CofC time-out with Coastal leading 9-7. The Lady Chanticleers then got two Thompson kills and one from Obert to maintain the lead 13-11. After a final Lady Cougar time-out, Nyhof responded with two huge kills, the game winner off of a College of Charleston overpass to make the score 15-12.
Coastal was led by Nyhof who had a .500 hitting percentage on 17 kills and scooped up seven digs. Nyhof was responsible for 18.5 points. Two other Lady Chants also hit for double-digits, Rinne blasted for 12 kills and Scheible put down 10 balls. Thompson also had a strong performance for Coastal tallying 10 digs and nine kills. Tracey recorded her ninth double-double and her fourth 50-plus assists match. Tracey ended the night with 51 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore libero Brett Starbuck scooped up 24 digs. Obert finished the night with eight kills. As a team, Coastal hit .179 on 60 kills recording 16 total blocks.
Five Lady Cougars had double digits in kills on the night, Patrick led the way with 21 kills followed by Uthe who blasted 16. Tiffany Blum tallied 14 kills and Sawin and Voss had 13 apiece. Four other Lady Cougars had double digits in digs, Marie Dobrenz (19), Lindsey Kane (15), Megan Parkerson (15) and Alexis Lowes (10). Kane also had 71 assists. As a team, College of Charleston hit .201 on 85 kills with 41 errors and five total blocks.
The Lady Cougars continue on the road as they travel to Georgia Southern for a 7 p.m. match-up tomorrow night (11/1). The Lady Chanticleers host UNC Asheville on Saturday, November 4 at 6 p.m. as Coastal celebrates its homecoming.
