CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (8-3-1, 3-1 Big South) had to wait three hours due to severe weather in the Conway area, but the Lady Chanticleers were rewarded for their patience with a 2-0 win over VMI (3-8, 0-5 Big South) Oct. 8. Coastal Carolina has now won six of its last seven games and moved to 3-1 in the conference.
Coastal took a 1-0 lead at the 23:28 mark when sophomore Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) passed to junior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zelaand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) in the right corner. She crossed to senior Laura Weiler (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Catholic) in the left side of the box. Weiler then beat VMI goalkeeper Jessica Rheinlander for her third goal of the season.
Coastal had an 11-3 shot advantage in the first half, while both teams had two corner kicks in the first 45 minutes. The Lady Chanticleers had a team save on a header by Jessica Robbins at 16:28, while Rheinlander had three first-half saves.
Junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored her seventh goal of the 2006 campaign at 56:06. She received a pass from senior Stepheney Gerhardt (Mohawk, N.Y./Ilion (Herkimer C.C.)) and dribbled past Rheinlander, who came out about six yards from the goal line. She then had an open net and converted in the left corner, giving Coastal the final 2-0 margin.
Coastal outshot VMI 19-4 in the game and had both corner kicks in the second half. Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had one save and earned her third shutout of the season and third straight shutout against VMI. Rheinlander had five saves for the Keydets, while VMI also had a team save on senior Simone Borucinski’s (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) bender off a corner kick.
The win also was the 50th career coaching win for Coastal’s Rohan Naraine.
Coastal heads to Radford, Va., to face Radford Saturday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. VMI hosts Southern Virginia Oct. 10 at 4 p.m.
