CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (2-0) defeated Southern Virginia University (0-5) 90-31 Nov. 20 in Conway, S.C. The 31 points was the second-lowest total allowed by the Lady Chanticleers in school history and all 13 players who dressed put points on the board.

Southern Virginia had its only lead at 19:20 on two Lynette Adams free throws, but Coastal quickly went on a 14-2 run that was capped by a free throw from freshman Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated). The lead went to 32-8 at 7:01 on a jumper from senior Kristy Yurichak (Walton Hills, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) and a three by junior Joanna Pekonen (Lapeenranta, Finland/Lafayette) with six seconds left gave Coastal a 47-14 lead at halftime.

Senior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) scored 12 points in the first half, while Yurichak had eight first-half points. Coastal outrebounded Southern Virginia 26-15 in the first half, led by Pekonen’s six boards. Freshman Lori Whitaker (Bloomington, Ind./North) dished out four assists in the first 20 minutes.

For Southern Virginia, Kendra Romito and Shalece Hibbert had four points apiece, while Romito had five rebounds.

A Dill layup at 14:07 of the second half pushed the lead to 40 (58-18) and it became 71-20 at 7:54 on a jumper by redshirt freshman Elizabeth Weaver (Unicoi, Tenn./Unicoi County). The Lady Chants broke the 90-point mark on a Whitaker three with 36 seconds left.

Coastal held the Lady Knights to 25.5 percent shooting and a 1-of-15 clip from three-point range. The 31 points is second only to the 1982-83 team’s 23 points allowed against Coker in a 67-23 win.

Coastal outrebounded the Lady Knights 63-30, grabbing 37 boards in the second half. Five players had six or more rebounds, led by Pekonen’s eight.

Dill led the team in scoring with 19 points, while freshman Lacey Lyons (Beverly Hills, Fla./Crystal River) had 11 points on 3-for-5 from three-point range. Yurichak was the third Lady Chant in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.

For Southern Virginia, Romito had nine points and eight rebounds.

Coastal will take part in the Ball State Federal Credit Union Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday, Nov. 25 against IPFW. That game will start at 3 p.m.

NOTES: Coastal had only eight turnovers on the night, while forcing 18... Whitaker, freshman Lauren Grochowski (Naperville, Ill./Central), freshman Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela), Weaver and senior Heather Hummel (Franklin, Pa./Slippery Rock) all got their first career points in a CCU uniform... Yurichak was 5-of-6 from the field... Coastal was 9-of-18 from three-point range and earned 54 bench points.
