Box Score Women's Basketball Defeats Savannah State 46-42

The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team (11-6) hit 17 free throws and, despite not hitting a field goal in the last 9:16, played solid defense to win 46-42 over Savannah State University (3-19) Feb. 1 in Savannah, Ga.   Coastal scored the first six points of the game, the final two on a jumper from senior Kim Turner (West Memphis, Ark./Hiwassee C.C.) at 16:24.  Savannah State would score its first points on a three from Amber West at 15:29.  Coastal would build a 10-4 advantage on two free throws from junior Alisha Dill (Johnson City, Tenn./Science Hill) at 12:48.  Savannah State would go on a 6-0 run that was capped by an Antoinette Williams layup at 9:43, but Coastal would get the lead to as much as 10 in the first half on a layup from sophomore C.J. Ware (Decatur, Ga./Lakeside) at 3:02.  Coastal would take a six-point lead into the lockerroom as a Lashara Smith layup with 37 seconds left capped the halftime scoring.   Young led the Lady Chanticleers with nine first-half points.  She went 4-of-5 from the field.  Dill also went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.  As a team, CCU was 9-of-10 from the line in the first half.  Savannah State was led by West’s seven points.  Coastal held the Tigers to 23.1 percent shooting from the field.    Savannah State scored the first six points of the second half, tying the game at 26, but a three from junior Calisha Yates (Columbus, Ind./Chattanooga State C.C.) at 16:18 ended that run.  Savannah State would take its only lead on a Williams jumper at 14:14, but Coastal would take a 32-30 lead on a Young free throw and a Turner jumper.  The lead would extend to six on a layup from senior Jasmine Tyler (Jacksonville, Fla./Okaloosa C.C.) at 10:23.  Junior Vanessa Laug (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) made it 39-33 at 9:16, but that would be the last field goal of the game.  Laug hit two free throws for a 41-33 lead, but SSU cut it to 42-39 at 6:59 on a layup from Shaunte Carter.  At 2:29, two free throws from Lashara Smith made it 43-42, and the Tigers had a look at a three to take the lead.  After that miss, Dill hit 1-of-2 from the line for a 44-42 lead.  Ware’s free throw at 1:09 gave Coastal a three-point lead and a Dill free throw with 36 seconds left clinched Coastal’s 11^th win of the season.   Young led CCU with 10 points, while Dill had eight points on 8-of-12 from the free-throw line.  Yates added nine rebounds.  Savannah State was led by Smith’s 10 points.   Coastal shot 32.5 percent from the field and 17-of-29 from the line.  Coastal outrebounded SSU 47-36 and held the Tigers to 24.6 percent from the field and 1-of-10 from three-point range.   Coastal will head to North Charleston, S.C., to face Charleston Southern University Saturday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m.   NOTES:  Coastal now has won all four games against Savannah State in the series… Senior Amber Rose’s (Bloomington Springs, Tenn./Upperman) streak of 11 straight double-digit games ended… The game had a combined 46 fouls and 45 turnovers.
