MURRELLS INLET, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina men's golf team could not make up ground in the final round and finished as the runner-up at the General Jim Hackler Invitational, Mar. 13. The 54-hole event was hosted by Coastal at TPC of Myrtle Beach (Par 72 - 6,950 Yards) in Murrells Inlet, S.C., Mar. 12-13.
The defending-champion Chanticleers shot 297 in the final round and lost five shots on second-round leader and eventual champion East Tennessee State. The #14 Bucs finished at 867 for the 54 holes, 10 shots better than Coastal in second and 20 shots ahead of #18 Pepperdine in third. For the event, the Chants, currently ranked 28th, defeated three of the four teams in the field ranked ahead of them, all by at least 10 shots. Alex Coe of Pepperdine, the 2003 individual champion, took home medalist honors at six-under 210, one shot better than defending medalist Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State.
Freshman Cameron Hooper (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) posted his first collegiate top-10 finish, placing seventh at one-over 217. Junior Dustin Johnson (Lexington, S.C./Dutch Fork) was next in a tie for 11th at 219, while sophomore Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) tied for 17th at 220.
Coastal will take almost three weeks off before returning to the course to play in the Augusta State Invitational, Sat.-Sun., Apr. 1-2. The 54-hole tournament will be played at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
