ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team (15-7, 4-3 Big South) were downed by Winthrop (12-6, 5-1 Big South) 7-0 on Friday afternoon, April 7 at the Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, S.C.
The number one singles match saw sophomore David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) fall to sophomore Vinicius Bortolatto 6-3, 6-1 while junior Elliott Quibell (Derby, England/Cheam (Colorado)) was defeated by sophomore Rodrigo Santos in the second singles match 6-4, 6-0.
Junior Simon Taylor (Hampshire, England/Queen's Mary College) took three sets but was defeated by sophomore Alejandro Portugal 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.
The fourth singles match was dropped by Coastal junior Andy Caress (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) to freshman Arthur Takahashi 6-3, 6-3 while Coastal's junior Richard Redding (Winscombe, England/Queen Elizabeth's Hospital) lost the fifth match 6-1, 6-1 to junior Jorge Padilla.
The Chanticleers dropped the sixth and final singles match as junior Ryan Weisband (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) fell to Thiago Barbosa 6-4, 6-1.
The Winthrop Eagles took the doubles point earlier in the afternoon.
The first CCU doubles team of Quibell/Redding was defeated by Santos/Germano Knorr 8-6. Coastal's second doubles team of Taylor/Caress fell to Padilla/Portugal 8-4 while the third doubles match was taken by the Winthrop duo of Bortolatto/Takahashi over the Chanticleers' pair of Mellis/Dowis 8-4.
The Chants take to the road for the Big South Conference's Men's Tennis Tournament next week from April 13-15 in Birmingham, Ala. The Chants have secured the #4 seed and will match up with #5 seed High Point University (9-9, 3-4 Big South) at a yet to be determined time.
