FAIRFAX, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (1-1) had a first-period goal from sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach), but the Lady Chanticleers gave up three second-half goals in a 4-1 loss to George Mason (1-0-1) Aug. 27 in Fairfax, Va.

Coastal had an early 4-1 shot advantage, including a good look from junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) in the third minute, but the Patriots got on the board first. L.J. Williams’ shot from three yards out in the center of the box gave GMU a 1-0 advantage at 13:02. Williams’ goal was assisted by Jessica Paris. Coastal evened things at one at 33:54 when senior Leah Hackmann (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) saved the ball from going out of bounds in the right corner, then crossed to Monroe, who’s header hit the left post and went in past Kasey Davenport. It is Monroe’s 20th career goal, tying her for second on Coastal’s all-time goal scoring list.

Coastal outshot the Patriots 9-7 in the first half, while GMU had a 5-3 corner-kick advantage. Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary), playing in her hometown, had two saves in the first period, while Davenport stopped five shots.

George Mason came out firing in the second half, attempting the first seven shots of the period. Stoll had two saves and sophomore Danielle DeSonia (Fairfax Station, Va.,/Hayfield Secondary), also playing in her hometown, had a team save with a header off a corner kick. Mason then went up 2-1 after a Sarah Fack goal which was assisted by Laura Salichs at 60:00. Rachel Wiggins scored the Patriots’ third goal that slipped just past the goal line at 65:57. Mason made it 4-1 when Annie Lebhertz shot from 10 yards out over Stoll with an assist from Leslie Cabe at 73:43.

For the game, Mason outshot Coastal 20-11, including 13-2 in the second half. Gunning led CCU with five shots. The Patriots had a 9-3 corner-kick advantage, while Stoll had six saves for the Lady Chanticleers. Davenport had five stops for the Patriots.

Coastal will host the College of Charleston Thursday, August 31 at 6 p.m.
