Box Score Women's Soccer Shuts Out Campbell 2-0 More Information:
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (3-2-1) earned its first shutout of the season, defeating Campbell (0-4) 2-0 Sept. 11 in Buies Creek, N.C.
Coastal outshot Campbell 12-2 in the first half and after a good opportunity to score in the 35th minute by junior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)), sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) connected unassisted at 36:05 for her fourth goal of the season. She also moved to second by herself on the Coastal career goals list with her 21st tally.
Campbell had two corner kicks in the first half, compared to one for Coastal. Samar Azem had one save for the Fighting Camels.
Coastal scored its second goal off its first penalty kick of the season. Campbell had a foul in the box after a Coastal direct kick, leading to the penalty try. Junior Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) slipped it past Azem at 82:30 for the two-goal cushion. It was Humphries’ first goal in a Coastal uniform.
For the game, Coastal outshot Campbell 19-6, including 7-4 in the second half. Campbell had the 6-5 advantage in corner kicks, while Azem had four saves for the Fighting Camels. Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) earned her first shutout of the season and the 11th of her career in the victory. Gunning had four shots to lead CCU.
Coastal opens Big South play at Birmingham-Southern Friday, Sept. 15 at 3 p.m.
