Nakia Thompson and Kristin Rinne have double-doubles

CHARLESTON, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina volleyball team opened up their Big South Conference play with a win on the road against Charleston Southern, 30-25, 27-30, 30-21, 30-20. Two Lady Chanticleers had double-doubles as the team moves to 1-0 in the conference, 4-10 overall on the 2006 season.

Despite a late five point run for Charleston Southern, a kill from senior Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) sealed the deal for Coastal in game one, 30-25. The two teams went point-for-point until Rinne served for seven straight points putting Coastal ahead 17-10. Despite seven Coastal errors and two kills apiece from CSU’s Jillian Worby, Canan Erdogan and Jenni Shepherd, CSU could not regain the lead. Freshman Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) led the Lady Chanticleers with four kills while junior Nakia Thompson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) had two kills and eight digs and Rinne recorded two kills. Coastal hit .125 in game one while the Buccanneers had a .068 hitting percentage.

Charleston Southern came from behind to win the second game 30-27. The two teams went point-for-point again in game two never having more than a four point difference throughout the game. The Lady Chanticleers went on a 15-9 run before kills from Ashlee Kadadtz, Lauren San Martin and two attack errors on Thompson brought CSU withing three points,16-13. Ten Coastal errors and four kills from Shepherd helped CSU with the win. The Lady Chants hit .178 in the second game.

Coastal took an early 11-4 lead in game three off a Nyhof kill and never looked back in a 30-21 win. The Lady Chants took advantage of the nine Buccaneer errors and the strong arms of Nyhof and Thompson who each had four kills. Despite six Shepard kills and three from Worby, CSU only hit .087 to Coastal’s .306

Coastal jumped out to a 16-9 lead in game four in taking the game 30-20. Thompson had six kills, Nyhof had four and seniors Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) and Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville) had three kills apiece. The Lady Chants had their highest hitting percentage in game four with .447, while CSU hit .108.

Both Thompson and Rinne recorded double-doubles in the win. Thompson led the offense with 18 kills, 23 digs while Rinne had 10 kills, 14 digs. Nyhof ended the night with 17 kills. Obert and Scheible also added strong performances with 9 kills and 8 kills respectively.

For Charleston Southern, Jenni Shepherd had 19 kills and Jillian Worby had 13 kills, 10 digs in the loss.

Coastal ended the game with a .258 hitting percentage and seven total blocks. CSU hit .096 on the match and had six total blocks.

Coastal returns to Kimbel Arena Sunday, September 25 to meet Jacksonville. The match starts at 2 p.m.
