CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina volleyball team (4-12, 1-1 Big South) fell to Winthrop (17-2, 2-0 Big South) 3-0 Sept. 29 in Conway, S.C. Winthrop won its 39th consecutive Big South match by scores of 30-13, 30-28, 30-23.

In game one, Winthrop took the early lead 16-7, taking advantage of seven Coastal errors, two big Eagle blocks and the strong arm of Shannon Sitzmann. Winthrop hit .429 to Coastal's -.061 with 14 kills. Sitzmann had four kills in the game. For Coastal, Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) led the offense with three kills while Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) added two apiece. The Lady Chanticleers dropped the game 30-13.

Despite a negative hitting percentage and strong serving from four Lady Chanticleers, they could not seal the deal in the final points and fell 30-28. Coastal matched Winthrop point-for-point thanks to the strong arms of Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North), Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central), Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Andover Central) and Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) who served for 22 combined points. Coastal took the lead 26-24 thanks to the arm of Tracey and two Winthrop attack errors forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. Winthrop came out firing, getting three big kills from Sitzmann, an ace from Kelli Kirkwood and two Coastal attack errors to get the victory. Sitzmann ended the game with six kills. Coastal hit -.085 to Winthrop's .120. For Coastal, Nyhof had three kills.

Coastal again matched Winthrop point-for-point in game three until Coastal took a timeout at 24-20. Two kills from Tori Grafeman, a Surbaugh ace, two Lady Chanticleer attack errors and a huge block from Surbaugh and Sitzmann ended the game, 30-23. Winthrop had a solid game from Grafeman, who put down five balls while Sitzmann and Emily Stockman had four kills apiece. Rinne had four kills and Scheible added three. Coastal hit .045 on 11 kills with nine errors to Winthrop's 15 kills and .133 hitting percentage.

Nyhof led the Lady Chanticleer offense with seven kills and nine digs on the night. Rinne put down six balls and fellow seniors Obert and Scheible each tallied four kills. Pollard scooped up nine balls.

For Winthrop, Sitzmann blasted 14 kills and three Eagles had double digits in digs, Kirwood (10), Stockman (13) and libero Pohai Nu'Uhiwa (15). Winthrop hit for .195 on 44 kills and had 13 total blocks. Coastal hit -.032 on 25 kills with five team blocks.

Coastal will look to get its second Big South win against High Point tomorrow when the Panthers come to Kimbel Arena. The match is set for 4 p.m. Winthrop returns to action tomorrow night when they travel to Charleston Southern to take on the Buccaneers at 6 p.m.
