CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina volleyball team fell to 4-13, 1-2 in the Big South after losing to conference rival High Point, 24-30, 30-25, 30-18, 30-20. High Point improved to 4-12, 2-1 in the Big South.
Coastal came out strong in game one maintaining the lead throughout the entire game. Two early kills from Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) and Kristin Rinne (Fountain Hills, Ariz./Fountain Hills) and six Panther errors gave Coastal the early 11-8 lead. Strong serving from Rinne and fellow senior Ashley Scheible (Westerville, Ohio/North) helped Coastal cruise to victory, 30-24. Coastal hit .176 on 15 kills, with Rinne having five. For High Point, Jamie Kaufman put down seven while her team hit .060 on 13 kills.
Coastal was on course to win the second game until High Point scored 11 unanswered points. Despite a Coastal timeout, the Lady Chanticleers couldn't slow the momentum of the Panthers and dropped the game 25-30. Coastal couldn't control the strong arm of Kaufman who exploded for 11 kills. High Point took advantage of nine Lady Chanticleer errors and hit for .156 on 19 kills to Coastal's .050 hitting percentage and 12 kills. Scheible led the offense with five kills and freshman libero Megan Pollard (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scooped up 10 balls.
In game three, High Point ran away with the lead early on 12-7 after four Kaufman kills and three from Ashley Johnson. After a Coastal Carolina timeout, the Panthers took advantage of six Lady Chanticleer errors and two more kills from Kaufman and Johnson to put the score at 23-14. Lauren Hatch took the ball for High Point and served five straight points. A Kaufman kill and a service ace from Kristina Taylor sealed the deal for the Panthers who won the game 30-18. The Panthers again relied on Kaufman, who had 10 kills on a .421 hitting percentage, as a team they hit .292 on 19 kills. Coastal was led by senior Laura Obert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) who had four kills. As a team they hit .083 on 11 kills with seven errors.
Both teams matched each other point-for-point in game four putting the score at 16-16 until High Point's Audrey Gonzalez served for six unanswered points. High Point then took advantage of five Coastal errors and kills from Taylor, Johnson and Kaufman to win the game 30-20. Coastal hit for .077 on nine kills, with Obert having three. The Panthers hit .188 on 17 kills.
High Point had two players have double-doubles on the afternoon. Kaufman exploded for 33 kills and 10 digs while Gonzalez had 11 kills and 22 digs. Johnson also put down 12 kills for the Panthers. Taylor had 49 assists. Coastal was led by Scheible, who ended the night with 12 kills, followed by Rinne and Obert who each had nine. Nyhof ended with eight on the night. Five Lady Chanticleers had double digits in digs. Pollard had a career-best 26 digs, Nyhof had 18, Rinne saved 14 balls, Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Andover Central) dug up 13 balls and Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) scooped up 12 and added a career-best 38 assists.
Coastal hosts South Carolina State on Tuesday, October 3 for a non-conference match at 7 p.m. High Point next faces UNC Asheville at home, also on Tuesday, October 3. That match is set for 7 p.m.
