CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (2-1-1) tied with Wofford (1-2-1) 2-2 in game three of the Big South/Southern Conference Challenge Sept. 4 in Charleston, S.C. For the second straight game, sophomore
Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) and junior
Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) scored in the first half.
McColl got the Lady Chanticleers on the board early, taking a counter and connecting on a 25-yard strike from midfield at 25 seconds. The Terriers tied the game at one at 13:19 as Jessica Connett took a Whitney Steelman cross and headed it in the back of the goal. CCU retook the lead at 25:10 as Gunning cleaned up a lost ball by Wofford goalie Austin Somers and shot in the left corner for her third goal of the year.
Coastal and Wofford had five shots each in the first half, while the Terriers had both corner kicks. Senior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had two saves for Coastal, while Somers stopped one shot.
At 55:26, Steelman took a cross from Natalie Ferrara and beat Stoll left to tie the game at two. Coastal had three good chances in the last 10 minutes of regulation, but junior Emma Humphries’ (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) shot was just wide, and shots by senior Simone Borucinski (Canberra, Australia/Daramalan College) and senior Stepheney Gerhardt (Mohawk, N.Y./Ilion (Herkimer C.C.)) were punched high by Wofford backup keeper Becca Maloney.
In the overtime periods, Stoll made a great save at 92:57 on Erika Bishop’s shot to keep the game tied. Coastal had a one-on-one in the second overtime, but Maloney grabbed the ball from a running sophomore Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach).
For the game, Coastal outshot Wofford 14-11, including 8-4 in the second half. Coastal had six corner kicks, compared to four for Wofford.
Stoll had four saves for the Lady Chants, while Maloney stopped four shots in the second half and overtimes.
Coastal will travel to Elon, N.C., to face Elon Thursday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m.
