Baseball Opens Fall World Series this Friday
CONWAY, S.C.–The Coastal Carolina University baseball team will open its annual Chanticleer World Series this Friday, Oct. 12 at 4:30 p.m., at Watson Stadium/Vroomen Field. The series will last five games over two weekends.
The Black and Teal teams will play Friday thru Sunday this weekend and Friday and Saturday next weekend. This Saturday’s game will start at 10:30 a.m., with Sunday’s matchup beginning at approximately 1 p.m. The Teal team is the defending champions, defeating the Black team in five games last year. Friday’s pitching matchup will feature senior Joey Haug (Holt, Mo./Maple Woods C.C.) going up against freshman Rich Witten (Danville, Ky./Danville). Saurday features sophomore Dan Lombardozzi (Herndon, Va./Herndon) against junior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) and Sunday’s matchup is sophomore Chad Jenkins (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) against fellow southpaw freshman Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania). ”I think the biggest part of the Chanticleer World Series is looking for the competitiveness in the kids,” Coastal baseball head coach Gary Gilmore said. “After the spring and the summer, not having any outside competition in the fall gets lackluster for the kids. It’s hard to get them juiced up to play. This is something they look forward to. This will give us a little better idea of where we are with some different things. We have bits and pieces we need to work out, but the biggest thing is seeing them compete and have something to play for.” The following are the roster for each team and the pitching matchups for the weekend.
