More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – Charleston Southern (10-4, 3-1 Big South) scored two second-half goals, including the game-winner in the 84th minute, in defeating the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (10-5-1, 4-1 Big South) 2-1 Oct. 24 at the CCU Soccer Field.    Senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) took advantage of a CSU turnover in the box and rifled a shot by Jena Uvalle for her 12th goal of the season in the 15th minute. She now moves into sole possession of third place on CCU’s all-time single season goals record. Charleston Southern had chances to score in the first 45 minutes, but freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) made four saves, including back-to-back saves on Marky Boyce in a two-minute span.    Coastal had a 10-5 shot advantage in the first half and a 4-1 corner-kick advantage. Uvalle had two saves for the Lady Bucs.   Charleston Southern quickly tied the game on a Boyce goal off a corner kick at 46:14. She was assisted by Jen Vroman and it was her sixth goal of the year. Coastal then had 14 shots in the second half, but could not connect. The best chance came in the 74th minute as Uvalle save point-blank shots by junior Heather Haupt (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and senior Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I./Johnston (University of New England). Charleston Southern would connect on its sixth shot of the half, as Emma Mattson received a Vroman cross and put it past Haggard at 83:18. Coastal had one more shot-on-goal, but fell short in its quest for its eighth straight win.   Coastal outshot the Lady Bucs 24-11 and had a 9-4 corner-kick advantage. Haggard ended the game with four saves, while Uvalle had seven. Charleston Southern won its sixth straight game, a school record, while Coastal saw its seven-game win streak end in the loss.   Gunning led Coastal with seven shots, while Boyce and Mattsson had four shots apiece.   Coastal travels to Lynchburg, Va., to face LIberty Saturday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. Charleston Southern travels to play Radford the same day at 5 p.m.
