ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Coastal Carolina University's volleyball team scored its second road win of the season, defeating UNC Asheville 3-1 Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Justice Center. Game scores were 30-18, 29-31, 30-27, 30-25.

A pair of five-point runs helped Coastal cruise to a game one win. Freshman Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) had a kill that started the first five-point run. Then freshman Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) tallied a kill to spark the Lady Chants' second five-point run.

Trailing by five late in game two, Kimes had a kill that sparked a five-point run that allowed Coastal to even the game at 22-all. After Coastal and UNC Asheville traded points, the Bulldogs tried to pull away with a three-point run. However, the Lady Chants responded with a three-point run of their own to make it a 26-26 game.  Two more ties would occur in the game, but the Bulldogs scored the final two points of the game in order to even the match at one game a piece.

As Coastal held a six-point 21-15 lead, UNC Asheville started to rally and eventually made it a 22-22 game.  The Bulldogs would take a 26-25 lead off a Coastal attack error, but a kill from sophomore Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview)  evened the match at 26-26 and sparked a timely four-point service run. After UNC Asheville pulled to within two, a kill from Bickford ended the game.

In game four, the Lady Chanticleers withstood a late five-point run that saw UNC Asheville cut an eight-point deficit down to three and make it a 27-24 game in favor of Coastal. The Lady Chants got the final three points they needed off two Bulldog attack errors and a kill from Bickford.

Nyhof led Coastal with 18 kills, while Bickford had 16 kills and a .433 hitting percentage. Sophomore Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) added 49 assists. Junior Brett Starbuck (Glen Allen, Va./J.R. Tucker) had a match-high 24 digs.

Alysha Greer totaled a match-high 20 kills, while Kelsey Benorden had a 12-kill, 18-dig double-double for the Bulldogs.

The Lady Chants return to action next Friday night at rival Winthrop. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at Winthrop Coliseum.
