More Information:

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (12-5-1) scored a goal in each half in defeating USC Upstate (3-14) 2-0 Oct. 31 in Spartanburg, S.C. It was the final non-conference game for the Lady Chanticleers in 2007.   Senior Amanda Gelsomino (Johnston, R.I/Johnston (University of New England)) got Coastal off on the right foot as she scored from an awkward angle on the right side of the net at 8:05. It was her sixth goal of the year and was assisted from freshman Anna Tupy (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison). Coastal controlled most of the possession in the first half, having a 13-3 shot advantage and all six corner kicks. USC Upstate’s Brittany Daughtry saved three shots, while freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) did not face a shot on goal.   Coastal made it 2-0 in the 58th minute as freshman Sara Niles (Elgin, Ill./Elgin) fed the ball into the box. It was deflected by a USC Upstate defender, but sophomore Maegen Hellberg (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) collected it and beat Daughtry for her second goal of the season. Haggard and redshirt junior Britt Pecora (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Socastee) then helped the Lady Chants to their eighth shutout of the season, a new school record.   Coastal outshot the Spartans 20-4 and had the 8-0 corner-kick advantage. The two Coastal keepers did not face a shot, while Daughtry ended the game with seven saves. Gelsomino and redshirt junior Emily McColl (Wellington, New Zealand/Hutt Valley) led Coastal with four shots, while four Spartans had a shot apiece.   Coastal ends the regular season with Senior Day against Radford Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m., with a chance to win a Big South regular season title. Gelsomino, Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)), Emma Humphries (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden College (Cal State Fullerton)) and Jill Karelitz (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork) will be honored at halftime of the game.
