CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University softball team split two games with East Carolina on Tuesday, Mar. 13. Coastal dropped the first game 7-1 and won the second 7-6.   In game two, the Lady Chants were down early after eight hits and five runs by East Carolina in six innings.   Kristina Sheppard (Galveston, Texas/Ball) got things started offensively in the bottom of the sixth with a double to left center. Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle’s Landing) then moved Sheppard into scoring position with a single ground ball to second base. Coastal then got on the scoreboard with a three-run homerun from senior Carla Hood (Marion, S.C./Marion) to bring the Chants within two at 5-3.   In the top of the seventh, the CCU defense allowed one ECU run when Joyce Roodenburg hit an RBI double down the right line to go on top 6-3.   In Coastal’s last at bat Danyelle Gerdts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) singled up the middle. Glynn Tolleson (Tomball, Texas/Tomball) put two on with a walk. Sheppard was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with only one out. Cantrell brought the Chants within one at 6-5 with a double to right field. Kimberly Cillis (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia) evened the score with a base hit to the Pirate shortstop. Next up was  Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) who loaded the bases for a second time with a walk. Hood then sealed the win watching four pitches go by for a RBI walk and the 7-6 victory.   Hood went 2-for-3 at the plate and hit her fourth homer of the season. Both Gerdts and Cantrell finished game two 2-for-4.   Freshman pitcher Brittney Hollifield (Rockford, Tenn./Alcoa) improved her record in the circle to 3-3. Hollifield allowed 10 hits, five earned runs, and stuck out four batters.   In game one Coastal fell to the Lady Pirates 7-1. ECU took a demanding lead in the second inning scoring six runs on four hits and one CCU error.   Erika Trujillo (Littleton, Colorado/Dakota Ridge (Northern Colorado)) reached first with a single through the right side. Sheppard later walked which scored Trujillo for the only Chanticleer run of the contest.   In the seventh, ECU went on top 7-1 scoring a run on two hits and held the Chants scoreless in the bottom of the inning to get the victory.   In the circle for Coastal were both Trish Kretchman (Berrien Springs, Mich./Lakeshore) and Danyelle Gerdts. Kretchman threw for three innings, allowed four hits and struck out three batters. Gerdts pitched the remaining four innings, allowed five hits and struck out two ECU Pirates.   After the doubleheader, Coastal is now 7-18 overall and ECU is 17-7 on the season. The Lady Chants will continue their stint at home with a three-way doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday Mar. 17-18 with the games starting at 12 p.m.
