CONWAY, S.C. – The 15th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (26-3, 5-0 Big South) earned its 14th straight win in a 5-1 victory over Charleston Southern (13-20, 0-5 Big South) March 31 in Conway, S.C. The Chanticleers have more wins after 29 games than any team in the program’s history.
Sophomore Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill) improved to 6-1, giving up an unearned run in eight innings. Gagg struck out seven Buccaneers and did not allow a walk in the win. Junior Dustin Koca (Papillion, Neb./Butler County C.C.) and sophomore David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) took care of the ninth as Anderson induced a double play to end the game. It was his sixth save of the season.
Coastal struck first as sophomore David Sappelt (Saxapahaw, N.C./Graham) doubled on the first pitch of the bottom of the first. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill). The Bucs came back with a run in the second. With two outs Chris Krogmeier singled to right. Mark Perry reached on an error by sophomore Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and David Perkins brought in Krogmeier with a single to right.
Bortnick made up for the error in the bottom of the second, as he belted his first home run of the season. He brought in Anderson, who singled to open the inning.
Both pitching staffs shut down the offense until the bottom of the eighth. Duggan belted a leadoff home run off the light pole in left field. It was his second home run of the season. Senior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall) walked for the third time in the game and moved to second on a sacrifice from Baldridge. Anderson’s walk loaded the bases and a single from junior Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) brought in the Chants’ fifth run.
Anderson and Martin had two hits apiece for Coastal. Bortnick had two runs-batted-in. For Charleston Southern, Sean Doherty and Krogmeier had two hits on the day.
The loss was tagged to DJ Throneburg, who gave up three runs and six hits in 4.2 innings. Payton Tewddale threw the final 3.1 innings, striking out two and allowing three hits and two runs.
Coastal now matches the win streak of March 21-April 22, 1990. That team went 40-19 on the season. The 1983 team went 25-3-1 in the first 29 games. That team ended the season 46-12-1.
