More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – The 15th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (27-3, 6-0 Big South) used strong pitching and the long ball in its 10-0 win over Charleston Southern (13-21, 0-6 Big South) April 1 in Conway, S.C. With the win, Coastal has won 15 games in a row, the longest current streak in the nation, and has the program’s best start after 30 games at 27-3.

Senior John Mariotti (Toronto, Ontario/Gulf Coast C.C.) pitched Coastal’s third great start of the weekend, carrying a no-hitter into the seventh inning. He also was one strikeout away from a career high as he fanned nine Buccaneers. For the game, he allowed three hits and did not walk a batter.

Senior Matt Rademacher (Bay City, Mich./Michigan) launched a three-run home run to left field to give Coastal a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Rademacher brought in senior Dom Duggan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./John Carroll) and senior Chris Raber (Coplay, Pa./Whitehall), who singled and walked, respectively. Junior Derek Martin (Barnwell, S.C./Barnwell) went deep in the fourth to right center for his first home run of the season.

In the fifth, Duggan walked and scored on Raber’s 10th blast of the year, making it 6-0 Coastal. Coastal scored a single run in the seventh. Martin doubled and scored on a single up the middle from sophomore Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).

Mariotti had given up just two hit-by-pitches in the first six innings. He had seven strikeouts in that time. The no-hit bid was broken by Justin Fyle, who singled to open the inning. The Bucs actually had three hits in the inning, loading the bases, but Mariotti struck out Mark Perry and got Adam Brown to fly out to end the threat.

Coastal brought in a pair in the seventh. With runners on first and second, sophomore David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) doubled to score junior Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill). Freshman David Poutier (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) hit a high chopper for a single, scoring Rademacher. Coastal scored a run in the eighth on a Rademacher single that scored Raber.

Freshman Dan Lombardozzi (Herndon, Va./Herndon) and sophomore Pete Andrelczyk (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) pitched the final two innings in helping the Chants to their fifth shutout of the season.

Rademacher and Martin had three hits apiece to lead CCU. Rademacher drove in four runs and scored a pair, while Martin had two runs scored and a run-batted-in. Baldridge had two hits in the game. For CSU, Fyle, Stephen Herzog and Chris Krogmeier had the three hits for the Bucs.

The loss fell to Cody Higgins, who gave up six hits and six runs in 4.1 innings.

Coastal’s 27-3 record surpasses the 25-3-1 record that the 1983 team had. The 15-game winning streak tied for second-best in Coastal history. The 1983 team won 19 in a row, while the 1982 team also had a 15-game streak.

Coastal will take the midweek off and resume play Friday, April 6 at Troy. Game time is at 7 p.m. EDT (6 p.m. Central). Charleston Southern hosts Taylor this Tuesday at 2 p.m.
