CONWAY, S.C.–The CoastalCarolinaUniversity women’s soccer team (3-4-1) fell to Francis Marion (2-3-1) 4-0 Sept. 21 in Conway, S.C. The Patriots scored twice in both halves to earn the win.   FMU got on the board in the 13th minute as Kirby Stenard took an Ashley Fortune pass and shot from five yards out for the 1-0 advantage. In the 32nd minute, Nina Connell collected a CCU header, dribbled and put it in just inside the left post for her first goal of the season. Coastal outshot the Patriots 8-7 in the first half and had a 3-1 corner-kick advantage. Freshman Amy Haggard (Sylva, N.C./Smoky Mountain) had two saves for CCU, while Jacque Sutphin stopped four shots.   Fortune put in her first goal of the year at 67:46 with an assist to Margaret Fanning. Fortune would then assist on the corner kick at 83:18 when Stenard headed the ball in the net for her second goal of the game.   Both teams had 13 shots for the game with Coastal coming away with a 5-4 corner-kick advantage. Haggard had three saves for the Lady Chanticleers. Sutphin had six saves in the shutout for the Patriots.   Junior Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) and senior Ashleigh Gunning (Baton Rouge, La./Magnet (LSU)) had four shots apiece for Coastal, while Angela Salem had four shots for FMU.   Coastal is at the College of Charleston Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m., while Francis Marion hosts Presbyterian this Sunday at 2 p.m.
