CONWAY, S.C. – In front of the largest home crowd in two years at Kimbel Arena, the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (13-7, 3-2 Big South) defeated the Winthrop Eagles (5-11, 2-2 Big South) 3-1 Tuesday, Oct. 7. The match was the Chanticleers featured DIG PINK event, where both squads wore pink warm-ups and the Chants donned pink socks throughout the contest. Coastal Carolina University President David A. DeCenzo spoke before the match of his battle with cancer and former player Martha Davis, a six-year breast cancer survivor, performed the first serve of the match. "I'm thrilled with the victory," commented Head Coach Kristen Bauer. "It was such a special occasion with our DIG PINK event and it couldn't have gone any better. It was refreshing to see all the girls hard work pay off, because they have worked so hard at collecting donations." The Chants started strong, edging the Eagles 4-1 to begin the first set, but Winthrop climbed back into the match playing to a 14-14 tie and registered the next four points to take a 18-14 lead. A kill from sophomore Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) would bring the Chanticleers within one point at 24-23, but Winthrop's Kelley Taylor knocked down a kill to claim the first set 25-23. "I'm proud of the way we bounced back after the first set," Bauer continued. "The crowd was great and I think they made all the difference. It was definitely a team effort and a great win for us." With the home crowd starting to weigh in, Coastal Carolina fed off the energy in the arena and used its powerful serve to register four aces and built a 9-2 lead. Eight more kills would double the lead to 18-9, with Winthrop unable to find its defensive stance. Another four-point rally enabled the Chanticleers to go ahead 24-11 and a deceptive attack by junior setter Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) sealed the 25-12 set victory for Coastal Carolina. Winthrop started the third frame with intensity coming out of the lockerroom to compile an 8-3 advantage over the Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina would play point-by-point to work its way back into to the match and evened the score at 10-10, one of eight ties in the frame. With the score tied at 15-15, the Chants rifled off the three points but Winthrop would put together a rally of its own leading to an 18-18 stalemate. The Chanticleers were able to break through to go up 23-21 on a kill by Kimes steering the Chanticleers to a 25-22 win in the third set. Neither team was ready to let down in the fourth frame as the teams exchanged points once again. Down 15-13, the Chanticleers earned the next five points behind kills from Kimes and sophomore Megan Bickford (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South). Winthrop attempted a comeback to pull within two points, but Coastal Carolina attacking specialist Kimes recorded her 15th kill of the match to for the 25-20 victory. The Chanticleers had three players post double-digit kills on the night, with Kimes' 15, Bickford's 12 and sophomore Amanda Russell (Liberty, Ind./Union County) earning 10 of her own. Winthrop's Kaley Viola had a match-high 17 kills, while teammate Shannon Sitzmann registered 12 kills. With the Chanticleers raising funds on the night for every dig made by a Coastal Carolina player, the team recorded 56 digs in the match. Coastal Carolina's serve was back in check after being held without a service ace in its previous match as they recorded 13 service aces in the win.   Coastal Carolina returns to action Saturday, Oct. 11, when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 2 p.m.
