CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team (24-8, 12-3 Big South) out-hit the Bulldogs .195 to .024 in the first set en route to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-23) victory over UNC Asheville (16-12, 8-7 Big South) Friday, Nov. 14 at Kimbel Arena. Sophomore
Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster) recorded her eight double-double of the season with 12 kills and 11 digs. The Bulldogs were led by Kelsey Benorden, who registered 12 kills. The Chanticleers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, but Asheville quickly closed the gap to tie the score at 5-5. The frame continued to be a tight battle as the teams swapped points, leading a 12-12 tie. Coastal Carolina took a slim lead at 15-12, but Asheville battled back pulling to within one point at 17-16. Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) finishing off the set with a kill at 25-19. With the score tied at 7-7 in the second frame, a series of attacking errors placed the Bulldogs at an 11-7 deficit. There was no let up for the Bulldogs though as they fought through their miscues to cut the lead to 16-15. An attacking error by the Chanticleers tied the game at 19-19, but Kimes fired a kill though the Asheville block to take the lead for the Chants. A kill by Kaitlyn McDaniel drew the Bulldogs to within one point at 23-22, but another attacking error by Asheville and a kill by sophomore
Amanda Russell (Liberty, Ind./Union County) gave the Chanticleers a 25-22 victory in the second set. Entering the third set, the Chanticleers set the tone taking a 9-3 lead, but the Bulldogs inched their way back into the set to even the score at 15-15. The teams played to eight ties in the set, including a 22-22 deadlock. Bickford’s kill and an attacking error by the Bulldogs earned the Chants a 24-22 advantage, but Lauren Ficker’s found an opening in the Coastal Carolina defense, keeping the Bulldogs in the match. With the crowd on their feet in Kimbel Arena, Russell took to the air knocking down a power kill to give the Chanticleers a 25-23 victory. Coastal Carolina will close out the regular season Saturday, Nov. 15 at Kimbel Arena hosting Senior Day against Presbyterian. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
