More Information:

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women's basketball team (6-3, 0-0 Big South) went down 9-0 in the first two minutes and never found its way back as second-ranked North Carolina (10-0, 0-0 ACC) defeated the Chanticleers 95-44 at the Dean E. Smith Center Saturday, Dec. 13. Junior Devin Rivers (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) led the Chants with eight points, while four players scored in double digits for the Tar Heels, with Italee Lucas knocking down a game-high 17 points.   Looking at the final box score, it just was not Coastal Carolina's day, as no player reached double figures. Rivers' effort to collect eight points was not easy as the junior went 3-for-12 from the field and 2-of-4 at the free throw line. Sophomore Sydnei Moss (North Augusta, S.C./N. Augusta) was 2-for-18 on the day, earning six points and seven rebounds. Coastal Carolina's reserves provided a lift for the Chants scoring 24 of the teams 44 points on the day. UNC held Coastal Carolina's top scorer this season, junior Amanda Stull (Rushville, Ind./Rushville Consolidated), to two points the entire game.     The Heels jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes of play, led by Rashanda McCants' four points. Coastal Carolina got its first bucket of the afternoon when Moss pulled up just outside the top of the key, draining a jumper to put the Chants on the board at 9-2, with 17:58 left on the clock.   The Tar Heels fast break offense quickly stretched the lead to 24-4, as the Chants went into a scoring drought, allowing North Carolina to score 13 unanswered points. Redshirt junior Elizabeth Weaver (Unicoi, Tenn./Unicoi County) entered her first game of the season and made her presence felt, outhustling the Heels under the basket for two points to cut the margin to 34-10 with 8:04 remaining in the half.   Coastal Carolina seemed to settle in during the final eight minutes of play, but North Carolina would score 15 points, while the Chants picked up six points to end the half facing a 44-18 deficit. UNC applied a full court press that nearly smothered the Chants' offense in the opening half, forcing Coastal Carolina into 13 turnovers.      Leading by 31 points, North Carolina continued attacking the basket and stole the first five points of the second half as the Tar Heels extended the lead to 54-18. Stull scored her only basket of the game with 12:53 left in the second frame, to make it 71-29. Another good drive to the basket by Weaver and a triple by sophomore Jessica Noll (Myrtle Beach, S.C./St. James) cut the lead to 39 points, but UNC matched it with a trey from Lucas and a quick two by McCants to go ahead 78-34, with 8:27 left on the game clock.   Freshman Taylor Epley (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) stepped behind the arc to hit her first career three-pointer at 87-44, but North Carolina's high powered offense never let up going on to score the final eight points to stay undefeated on the season.   Coastal Carolina had their poorest shooting performance of the season going 16-for-66 from the floor, shooting 24.2 percent, while North Carolina shot 44.6 percent on 33-of-74 from the field. The Tar Heels held the advantage on the boards pulling down 57 rebounds, including 32 defensive boards, and the Chants managed 40 rebounds with only 19 at the defensive end.   After playing two tough road games in 13 days, Coastal Carolina will have a swift turnaround to end its road swing Tuesday, Dec. 16 at South Carolina State. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
