Softball Beats Jacksonville, Loses to UNC Greensboro More Information:
JACKSONVILLE, FLA. -- The Coastal Carolina University's softball team lost its first game, but won its second in the final day of the JU/Best Western Invitational at the JU Softball Complex Sunday, Feb. 10. The Lady Chanticleers lost to UNC Greensboro 6-4, but avenged Saturday's loss to Jacksonville with a 3-1 victory over the Dolphins.
UNC Greensboro started the scoring in the first game with a solo home run by Lyndsay Mouse in the top of the first. However, CCU offense answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the first inning. Sophomore Laicole Walker (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Collegiate School) had a lead-off triple and then scored off a double by junior Verity Long-Droppert (Claremont, Australia/Shenton (Western Australia).
The Spartans scored three unanswered runs, one in the second and two in the third, before the Lady Chants had a three-run fourth inning to make it a 4-4 game. Sophomore Mecaela Ballard (Groves, Texas/Port Neches Grove (Galveston JC)) scored on an Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) sacrifice bunt. Freshman Michelle Evans (Upland, Calif./Upland) crossed home plate off a single by junior Brittany Birnbaum (Chino, Calif./Ayala), who ended up scoring on an Ashley Pisone (Greenburg, Pa./Greenburg) single. However, UNC Greensboro got runs from Mary Greenway and Kristen Gabel in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, in order to seal the win.
Hannah Angel earned the win after pitching three innings and allowing one hit and no runs. Meanwhile, sophomore Ashley Frederick (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) took the loss after she pitched all seven innings and allowed six runs off 15 hits. Frederick also struck out nine batters.
Evans was 2-for-2 from the plate and had one run, while Walker was the only other Lady Chant with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
In the second game, the Lady Chants scored the game's first run as Long-Droppert scored off a Pisone single to center field. Jacksonville evened the score at 1-1 in the third inning as Beth Glasscock's single up the middle drove in Shannon Monahan.
The Lady Chants retook the lead with a two-run fifth inning. A double down the left field line by senior Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle's Landing) drove in Walker to give CCU the 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Birnbaum scored off another Pisone single.
Frederick picked up the win and pitched the complete game. She allowed one run off eight hits and tallied five strikeouts. Shannon Jensen had the loss for the Dolphins after coming into the game during the third inning and pitching for 3.2 innings. Jensen allowed two runs off five hits.
