Men's Tennis Falls at East Carolina, 6-1 More Information:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The Coastal Carolina University's men's tennis team lost to East Carolina 6-1 at the ECU Tennis Complex Saturday, March 1.
The Chanticleers were swept in the doubles competition. Jaroslav Horvath and Henrique Viana defeated sophomores Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) and Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. Aleksey Kochetov and Henrik Skalmerud beat senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201) 8-7 in the No. 2 slot. Bryan Oakley and Stephen Whitwell had an 8-6 win over freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) and junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) in No. 3 doubles.
In singles competition, Ramos had CCU's only victory as he topped Viana 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 slot. Horvath defeated Vlaskin 6-0, 7-6 in No. 1 singles, while Kochetov topped Mellis 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 slot. Skalmerud had a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tzvetkov at No. 4 singles. In the No. 5 slot, Oakley won over Withers 7-5, 6-3. Whitwell defeated freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilia, Brazil/Galois) 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Coastal returns to action against James Madison Friday, March 7. Match time is scheduled for 5 p.m. from Kingston Plantation.
