Box Score 2 Baseball Sweeps Charleston Southern with Doubleheader Win More Information:
N. CHARLESTON, S.C. – The 21
st-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (28-7, 7-2 Big South) completed a three-game sweep of Charleston Southern (12-21, 2-7 Big South) by winning both games of a doubleheader April 12 at Buccaneer Field. Coastal won game one 15-5 and took the nightcap 11-1. Coastal jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first of game one. Junior

Dock Doyle’s (Conway, S.C./Conway) 10
th home run of the year. The Buccaneers came right back as Steve Antolik hit a home run down the right field line, scoring Mark Perry and cutting the Coastal lead to 3-2. Charleston Southern then took its first lead of the series in the second as Taylor Black belted a two-run home run to right field, scoring Tyler Thornburg. Coastal bounced back with three runs in the third. Sappelt led off the inning with a single and went to third on a Woodward single. Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) then hit a comebacker to CSU pitcher Anthony Markham went home, but Jake Cox’s foot came off the bag, allowing Woodward to score. Junior
Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) then brought home Doyle with a sacrifice fly to left. Doyle would hit his second home run of the game, a solo shot to right that led off the fifth inning, giving Coastal a 7-4 lead. Sappelt drove in freshman
Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) in the sixth on a single to left, giving the Chants a four-run cushion. Coastal put the game away with a six-run seventh inning, sending 11 men to the plate. Woodward opened the inning with a double and came home on a Doyle single. Doyle moved to third on the play as the ball went by Tyler Thornburg. Rice brought home Doyle with a single, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Baldridge singled to put runners on the corners and pinch hitter
David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) sent everyone home with a bomb over the wall in left field. It was his fourth home run of the season. Bortnick would single and score on a double from Sappelt. CSU came back in the seventh as Black hit his second home run of the day, a shot to right center field. In the ninth, Woodward hit his third double of the day, scoring Sappelt to give Coastal a 15-5 lead.
Woodward went 5-for-5 on the game, scoring three runs. Doyle had three hits and four RBI in the win, while Sappelt was 4-for-6 with three RBI. For CSU, Perry was 3-for-5 and Black had three RBI with his two home runs. Senior
Joey Haug (Holt, Mo./Maple Woods C.C.) settled down to strike out nine in six innings. He gave up six hits and four runs and did not walk a batter. Markham took the loss, giving up seven hits and five earned runs in five innings. Woodward ignited the offense in game two, hitting a towering blast over the wall in right field, his second of the season. That was with two outs and the Chants kept on hitting, scoring six runs in the frame. Doyle doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a single from Rice. Baldridge singled to score Rice, who stole second two pitches earlier. Anderson was hit by a pitch and both runners would score on Bortnick’s third home run of the season. Charleston Southern answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Michael Obuchowski scored Kory Morian, who reached on an error earlier in the inning. Coastal added a run in the fifth. Rice reached on a double, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Baldridge. In the sixth, Bortnick singled to open the frame. He stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored as Noel bunted to first and the throw home was late. A 49-minute rain delay followed, but it didn’t slow the Chants down. Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) and Noel, making it 10-1 Coastal. Rice followed with a Texas League single, scoring Doyle. McCully went to 5-2 on the year, pitching four innings and allowing an unearned run and four hits with one strikeout. Coastal used five pitchers on the day with each one recording a strikeout. Thornburg earned the loss, allowing seven hits and 10 earned runs in 5.1 innings. Rice was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Bortnick drove in three runs and had two hits. For Charleston Southern, Steve Antolik and Michael Obuchowski had two hits apiece. Coastal travels to Charlottesville, Va., to face Virginia Tuesday, April 15 at 5 p.m.
