Box Score Baseball Wins Eighth Straight; Defeats UNC Asheville 10-4

CONWAY, S.C. – The 19th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (32-7, 9-2 Big South) won its eighth straight game with a 10-4 victory over UNC Asheville (16-26, 2-9 Big South) April 19 at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. Coastal scored four runs in the first and never looked back in the win over the Bulldogs.   Coastal did all of its damage with two outs in the first. Junior Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) singled to put runners on first and second with two away.  Junior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) then singled home freshman Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell), putting the Chanticleers on the scoreboard. Senior Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) then hit a towering home run to the new Rooster’s Nest in right field, giving the Chants a 4-0 advantage. Coastal added two runs in the fourth. Back-to-back singles from freshman Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) and freshman Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) set up two-run single by Woodward.    Woodward had his third RBI of the day in the sixth, singling home Noel with two outs. UNC Asheville got back into the game in the eighth. Kevin Weidenbacher and Reed Krieser singled with one out. Sophomore Dan Lombardozzi (Herndon, Va./Herndon) then walked Elliott Arrington and Justin Schumer unloaded the bases with a grand slam to left field. Freshman Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek) came in and got Danny Baatz to ground out and struck out Beau Zinman.   Coastal came right back and scored three runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior David Sappelt (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) doubled with one out. Woodward then brought in his fourth and fifth runs of the day with an opposite field home run. It was his third of the season. Sophomore Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) singled to center, stole second and scored on a single from Anderson. Rein gave up a hit and a walk in the ninth, but struck out Mike Vaughn to end the game.   Sophomore Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) became Coastal’s first six game winner of the season, allowing just five hits and striking out two in seven scoreless innings. Rein earned his first save of the season, striking out three in 1.2 innings. Chris Brookey took the loss for UNCA, giving up four hits and four runs in 2.1 innings.   Woodward had a career high five RBI while going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Anderson also had three hits, while Doyle, Baldridge and Noel had two hits apiece. For Asheville, Weidenbacher had three hits on the day.   Coastal and UNC Asheville will wrap up the series Sunday, April 20 at 3 p.m., at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
