RALEIGH, N.C. -- Coastal Carolina was swept by North Carolina State Wednesday, April 23 at Dail Stadium in what was the Lady Chanticleers' last midweek doubleheader of the regular season. Coastal lost the first game 9-0 in six innings and then fell 7-2 in the second.

In the first game, NC State took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Shanna Smith hit a lead-off home run to center field, and then with one out and Alyssa Allbritten on first, the Wolfpack took advantage of a Coastal miscue that allowed Allbritten to score. Meanwhile, both Claudia Cooper and Kristine Bechtholdt scored on RBI singles.

NC State added to their lead, scoring one run in the second and two in both the fourth and sixth innings. With two outs and Ashleigh Davis on first in the second, Cooper drove in Davis with a double down the left field line. Cooper then had a one-out, two-run double in the fourth to put the Wolfpack ahead 7-0. NC State ended the game in the sixth inning with a Bechtholdt two-out homer to right center and a 9-0 advantage.

Lindsay Campana had the win after allowing two hits and retiring 11 in six innings. Freshman Ashley Pedersen (Fayetteville, Ga./Whitewater) received the loss after pitching 3.1 innings. Pedersen allowed seven runs - four earned - off eight hits.

In the second game, Coastal jumped on the scoreboard first with sophomore Mecaela Ballard's (Groves, Texas/Port Neches Groves) (Galveston JC)) run in the top of the first inning. Ballard started the Coastal offense with a single. With one out, she stole second and then moved to third as junior Verity Long-Droppert (Claremont, Australia/Shenton (Western Australia)) grounded out. Senior Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle's Landing) sent a double down the right field line that drove in Ballard and gave the Lady Chants a 1-0 lead.

NC State evened the game in the bottom of the first. With two outs, the Wolfpack loaded up the bases as Allbritten doubled, Cooper walked and Allison Presnell was hit by a pitch. Mackenzie Mangum's walk allowed Allbritten to cross home plate and even the game 1-1.

Coastal took a one-run lead in the third inning. Sophomore Alyssa Tornatore (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) started the inning with a walk and freshman Jessica Scott (Green Sea, S.C./Green Sea Floyds) entered the game to pinch run for Tornatore. Scott moved to second as Ballard walked and then both runners advanced one base off junior Brittany Birnbaum's (Chino Hills, Calif./Ayala) sacrifice bunt. A Long-Droppert walk loaded the bases for Cantrell, whose popped ball caused a Wolfpack error, allowed Scott to score and put CCU up 2-1.

However, NC State scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. After Allbritten had a lead-off single, she scored the game-tying run off a Cooper double to right center. Presnell hit into a fielder's choice to freshman pitcher Michelle Evans (Upland, Calif./Upland), who threw the ball to sophomore Alicia Irwin (Salina, Kan./Salina South) to get Cooper out at third, but Presnell eventually stole second and then scored the go-ahead run on a Mangum single to right center.

The Wolfpack used a four-run fourth inning to pushed their lead to five, which would ultimately prove large enough for the win. Three of NC State's runs came from a Smith RBI single, a Cooper sacrifice fly and a Presnell RBI double, while its fourth run of the inning came as Presnell scored off a Coastal error.

Mendy McKenzie threw all seven innings en route to picking up the win. She allowed two runs - one earned - off three hits and struck out eight. Evans had the loss after throwing five innings, giving up three runs off five hits.

The Lady Chants conclude the regular season this weekend with a three-game series against Radford at the CCU Softball Field. The series begins with a doubleheader Saturday, April 26 with first pitch of the first game set for 2 p.m.
