Softball Loses Both Games to Radford More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. -- The Coastal Carolina softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader with Radford Saturday, April 26 at the CCU Softball Field. The Lady Chanticleers lost 2-0 in Game 1 and then 10-1 in six innings during Game 2.
Both Radford and Coastal remained scoreless through four innings during the first game, but the Highlanders broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth. Hope Creasy led the inning off with a double to right field and Lauren Williams entered the game to pinch run for Creasy. As Shannon Keefe sent a single up the middle, a Coastal miscue allowed for Williams to score and put Radford up 1-0.
The Highlanders took a 2-0 lead during the seventh. Kristen Shifflett and Creasy had back-to-back singles to start the inning and then both advanced one base off a Keefe sacrifice bunt. However, with two outs, a Coastal error allowed Shifflett to score from third.
Ashley Taylor allowed two hits and retired nine batters in seven innings en route to receiving the win. Freshman Michelle Evans (Upland, Calif./Upland) had the loss after throwing all seven innings and giving up seven hits with both of Radford's hits being unearned.
Although Coastal recorded a home run in Game 2, the Lady Chants were unable to match Radford's offense that hit four home runs, two RBI singles and one sacrifice fly.
Radford jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning with Vicki Madden and Keefe hitting home runs and Creasy having an RBI single. Madden sent a lead-off shot to left center. Shifflett laced a single through the left side and then stole second. She then scored off a single to left field by Creasy, who advanced to second the throw. In the next at-bat, Keefe sent a two-run blast to center field.
Coastal cut the lead down to three in the bottom of the second when Evans sent a one-out, solo home run to left center to make it a 4-1 game.
Radford built its lead in the fourth as Creasy hit a lead-off home run to center field. Then Keefe singled through the right side, moved to second on a Taylor groundout and then reached third on a wild pitch. Radford got a second base runner off an Ashley Carlson single, who eventually stole second. A Jenn Everhart deep sacrifice fly to center field allowed Keefe to cross home plate and give Radford the 6-1 advantage.
Meanwhile, Coastal had a key defensive stop during the fifth inning. Cassie Rhodes hit a lead-off single through the left side and then advanced to second as Madden grounded out. In the next at-bat, Shifflett sent a line-drive that hit off pitcher Evans' leg. Junior second baseman Verity Long-Droppert (Claremont, Australia/Shenton (Western Australia)) made the diving catch and then tossed the ball to senior shortstop Allison Cantrell (McDonough, Ga./Eagle's Landing) at second to get Rhodes out.
However, the Highlanders' offense added another four runs in the sixth. With runners on first and second and no outs, Taylor sent a three-run shot to center field. Meanwhile, with one out, Everhart reached base off a Coastal error and advanced to second off a Taylor Cunningham single to left field. She then scored off a Rhodes single to center field and allowed Radford to take the 10-1 lead, which ultimately proved to be the final score.
Rebecca Whalley received the win after throwing three innings and allowed just one run off one hit. Freshman Ashley Pedersen (Fayetteville, Ga./Whitewater) picked up the loss after she allowed nine runs - eight earned - off 11 hits.
Coastal Carolina closes out both the regular season and the Radford series Sunday, April 27 at the CCU Softball Field. Sunday will also be Senior Day as the Lady Chants will recognize Cantrell prior to the game, which will start at 1 p.m. and be televised on ESPNU.
