LEXINGTON, Va. – The 15
th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (35-8, 11-2 Big South) played past 11 p.m., for the second time in three games, but the Chanticleers again were successful in the late hours, defeating VMI (21-21, 10-6 Big South) 5-2 April 25 at Gray-Minor Stadium. Coastal struck first in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs. Freshman
Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) walked to lead off the inning. He would move to third on a double off the left field wall by junior
David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll). Junior
Dock Doyle (Conway, S.C./Conway) brought in Woodward with a pop out to second base. Anderson went to third on a groundout by sophomore
Adam Rice (Murphy, Texas/Elgin C.C.) and scored on a passed ball by the Keydets’ Mike Roberts. Coastal answered with a run in fifth. Sophomore
Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) walked to open the inning. He went to second on a single from junior
Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor). Freshman
Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) bunted both runners over and Iglesias would score on a single from junior
David Sappelt (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance). The Chanticleers added two more runs in the sixth. Doyle doubled to lead off the frame. Rice moved him to third on a sacrifice and Baldridge brought him in on a double off the wall in center field. Senior
Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Iglesias. Mike Roberts hit a two-run shot off Gagg in the eighth, cutting the lead to 5-2. That would end the night for Gagg as he went 7.1 innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out eight in improving his record to 6-1 on the year. Junior
Pete Andrelczyk (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) struck out two in the final 1.2 innings to record his seventh save. The loss fell to Barham, who gave up seven hits and four earned runs in six innings. Anderson and Baldridge had two hits apiece for CCU, while Sam Roberts had two safties for the Keydets. The rains in the Lexington area delayed the start of the game by 1 ½ hours while the final pitch was thrown at 11:18 p.m. Coastal and VMI will continue the series Saturday, April 26 at 6 p.m., in Gray-Minor Stadium.
