Men's Tennis Tops UNC Asheville, 4-3 More Information:
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team downed UNC Asheville 4-3 Friday, April 4. Weather conditions in the Asheville area caused a four-hour rain delay and for the match to be relocated to the Asheville Racquet Club.
The Chanticleers (8-11, 2-3 Big South) won the doubles point by topping UNC Asheville 8-6 at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) beat Mauricio Correa and Joseph May at the No.1 slot, while sophomores Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) defeated Tyler Begg and Nathan White at No. 2 doubles. In the No. 3 slot, Damien Snare and Nicholas Thuell had an 8-4 win over junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach).
Coastal and the Bulldogs (1-9, 0-2 Big South) split the singles matches, winning three each. Coastal picked up wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles. In the No. 2 slot, Ramos came away with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Begg. Vlaskin downed May 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in at No. 3 singles. Withers defeated Thuell 7-5, 6-2 in the No. 5 slot. Meanwhile, UNC Asheville had wins in the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6 slots. Correa defeated Mellis 7-6, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Snare beat Tzvetkov 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 slot. White had a 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 win over Hairston in at No. 6 singles.
Coastal returns to action Saturday, April 5 when the Chanticleers face Winthrop in their Big South regular season finale. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m., at The Winthrop Memorial Courts.
