CONWAY, S.C. -- The 21st-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (24-7, 4-2 Big South) split a doubleheader with Winthrop (12-19, 3-3 Big South) April 6 at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field on Henry O.Hucks Day. The Chanticleers won the opener 5-1 before falling in the nightcap 8-1.   Coastal had only three hits on the day in game one, but all three were homeruns, providing more than enough offense for senior Joey Haug (Holt, Mo./Maple Woods C.C.). Haug struck out seven in seven innings in improving his record to 4-0 on the season.    Freshman Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third. It was his first career home run as a Chanticleer. Winthrop starter Hamilton Bennett walked sophomore Adam Rice (Murphy, Texas/Elgin C.C.) to open the fourth and senior Tommy Baldridge (Fort Mill, S.C./Fort Mill) with two outs in the inning. Sophomore Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) then took Bennett’s 1-0 pitch over the wall in center field, giving CCU a 4-0 lead. Rice then led off the sixth with a home run to left field to complete CCU’s scoring.   Winthrop got its first three on base in the top of the ninth. Billy Froehlich was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He went to second on a single from Eddie Rohan and moved to third on a single from Tony Brunetti. Froehlich would score, but John Murrian grounded into a double play. Junior Pete Andrelczyk (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Twp.) got Aaron Bonomi to ground out to end the game.   Andrelczyk got the last three outs to pick up his fifth save. Freshman Matt Rein (Houston, Texas/Langham Creek) gave up two hits and a run in an inning-plus of work. Bennett was the hard-luck loser, giving up only three hits and five runs, striking out three in seven innings.   Tony Brunetti was 3-for-4 for the Eagles in defeat. Iglesias had three RBI on his second home run of the year.   Winthrop opened the second game by scoring two runs in the second. Froehlich walked to open the frame. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bryn Henderson. With one out, Murrian singled to score Froehlich. Murrian would then score on a double off the bat of Rohan.   Coastal answered with a run in the third. Freshman Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar), starting his first game as a Chant, doubled to open the inning. He went to third on a bunt single from Noel.  Junior David Sappelt (Graham, N.C./Southern Alamance) would hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Noell.   Winthrop would score three key runs in the sixth. Freshman reliever Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) retired Eddie Tisdale for the first out, but Kevin Nolan and Froehlich singled while Henderson walked, loading the bases. Nolan would score on a wild pitch, with all three runners moving up 90 feet. Andrelczyk came in the game in relief and gave up a single to Murrian, scoring Froehlich. Winthrop scored its third run on a wild pitch, plating Henderson.   Winthrop added insurance in the ninth. Rohan walked to open the inning. He went to second on a Louis Ullrich sacrifice bunt. Pinch runner Bryan Bogue would score on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Bonomi. Winthrop would then load the bases on a single from Tisdale and a walk to Nolan. Bonomi would score on a wild pitch from sophomore Jeremiah Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. Alban’s) and Tisdale would come home on a sacrifice fly from Froehlich.   Sophomore Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) was tagged with the loss, giving up seven hits and two runs in 4.1 innings. Andrelczyk struck out four in 2.2 innings. Ryan Mullins went to 3-0 on the year for the Eagles, striking out four in 5.2 innings. Matteo D’Angelo earned his second save, striking out five in 3.1 innings.   Noell had two of Coastal’s seven hits in the game, while Murrian was 3-for-4 with two RBI.   Coastal will travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face North Carolina State Wednesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. Winthrop is at Georgia April 8 at 5 p.m.
