Men's Tennis Rallies to Defeat Rival Winthrop, 4-3 More Information:
CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina's men's tennis team pulled out a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Winthrop Tuesday, April 8 at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center. The Chanticleers (9-11, 3-3 Big South) won the final three singles matches en route to defeating Winthrop for the first time since 1996.
The Eagles (10-9, 2-2 Big South) won the doubles point in order to take the early lead. Vincius Bortolatto and Arthur Takahashi defeated senior David Mellis (London, England/Goffs) and sophomore Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, while Rodrigo Santos and Alejandro Portugal had an 8-4 win over sophomores Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) and Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) in the No. 2 slot. Meanwhile, junior Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and freshman John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) won at No. 3 doubles, downing Jose Pardo and Marcin Majchrzak 8-5.
In singles play, Vlaskin topped Portugal 7-5, 6-0 in the No. 3 position, but Winthrop had wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles in order to take a 3-1 lead. Bortolatto defeated Mellis 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 1 slot, while Santos defeated Ramos 5-4, retired.
However, Coastal made its comeback with wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, all of which took three sets. Tzvetkov downed Takahashi 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles, while freshman Carlo Checchia (Brasilia, Brazil/Galois) topped Pardo 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the No. 5 slot. Withers completed the comeback with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Majchrzak at No. 6 singles.
Coastal returns to action against Presbyterian Tuesday, April 15 for the Chanticleers final regular season match. Match time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
