Baseball Summer League Update
Several members of the Coastal Carolina University baseball team have started playing in the various collegiate summer leagues around the country. Here is an update after two weeks of action. ALASKA Dan Lombardozzi (Herndon, Va./Herndon) had not allowed a run in eight innings of work for the Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska League. He has struck out six while allowing only four hits and a .182 opponent’s batting average. CAL RIPKEN, SR. LEAGUE Keith Hessler (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) has made two appearances for the Herndon Braves. He has a 3.00 ERA and five strikeouts in six innings. Paul Rodriguez (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Carolina Forest) is 1-0 in two appearances for the Braves. CALIFORNIA COLLEGIATE Austin Fleet (Edmond, Okla./Santa Fe) struck out nine in six innings for Santa Barbara in a 6-2 win over Santa Maria June 21. He allowed just two hits in his first outing with the Foresters. CAPE COD Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) has made two appearances for Bourne in the Cape Cod League. He is 1-0 with a 1.50 earned-run average and six strikeouts in six innings. He earned the win in a 6-1 victory over Orleans. COASTAL PLAIN Kent Altman (Conway, S.C./Conway) is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA for the Florence Redwolves. He has 10 strikeouts and has allowed just one run in 13 innings. Jeremiah Meiners (Silver Spring, Md./St. Albans) has appeared in five games, allowing just three hits in five innings… Coastal has three players on the Columbia Blowfish. Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) is hitting .286 with two doubles and four RBI in seven games. Rich Witten (Danville, Ky./Danville) has four hits and an RBI in six games. David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) has four hits, a home run and four RBI in seven games… Caleb Cuevas (Fletcher, N.C./Louisburg J.C.) is 1-2 with a 3.05 ERA for the Outer Banks Daredevils. He has 18 strikeouts and only two walks in 20.2 innings pitched… Coastal also has three players on the Peninsula Pilots. Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) is 3-for-8 (.375) in five games. Adam Rice (Murphy, Texas/Elgin C.C.) is hitting .273 with three RBI in four games, while Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) has 10 hits, seven runs scored, a home run and five RBI in 10 games. VALLEY Evan Noell (Salem, Va./Glenvar) is 5-for-9 with three RBI in three games for the Covington Lumberjacks. Caleb Sutton (Raeford, N.C./Scotland) is hitting .229 with a double, a home run and five RBI for Covington. Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) has two hits and two stolen bases in three games for the Lumberjacks… Jim Birmingham (Pine Hill, N.J./Penn) is 1-0 with a 4.58 ERA for New Market. Birmingham has 18 strikeouts in 19.2 innings for the Rebels.
