COSASTAL CAROLINA TAKES SECOND IN UNCW/COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT CLASSIC:The Chanticleers upset nationally ranked Charlotte on Friday in overtime, as Robert Hunter scored the golden goal 55 ticks into the first overtime to give the Chants the 2-1 upset over the 49ers. On Sunday, the Chants were downed by the Dayton Flyers, 3-1 after holding a 1-0 lead for the majority of the first half.
RUSSELL, PHELPS, KELLY NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Defender Kyle Russell, midfielder Ross Kelly, and forward Riley Phelps were named to the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott All-Tournament team. Russell led the defense, while Kelly had two shots and an assist. Phelps had his second goal of the season in the 2-1 victory over the 49ers on Friday.
CHANTS DOWN NATIONAL POWERHOUSE CHARLOTTE: Friday’s victory over the 49ers gave the Chants their second win of the season, and an impressive one to say the least. The 49ers received votes in last weeks NSCAA National Poll, and are ranked No. 2 in the Middle Atlantic Regional Poll before the 2-1 defeat.
SCOUTING THE UNCW/JAMESON INN FIELD:
UNC Wilmington: The Seahawks enter Wednesday’s contest with a 2-4 overall record, and are coming off a 1-1 weekend and fourth place finish in the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Classic. Friday, the Seahawks defeated the Dayton Flyers on the heels of a own goal right after halftime. On Sunday, Wilmington was downed by Charlotte 3-1.
VCU: The Rams will take on the University of Richmond on Wednesday. VCU enters the tournament with a 2-3 record, but has played an extremely difficult schedule. The Rams have been defeated by the top team in the country, Wake Forest 2-1, and No. 12 North Carolina, 1-0. VCU has defeated Virginia 3-1, and Bryant, 3-0 for their two victories on the year.
RUSSELL RACKING UP HONORS: With this past weekends honor of being named to the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Classic, Kyle Russell has now been named to three All-Tournament teams this season, the first being at the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational, and the Niagara Falls Classic All-Tournament Team.
READY TO GO: With the exception of Djamel Bekka, who is out for the year with a knee injury, the Chants finally appear to be healthy. Newcomers James Stapleton and Tyler Miles, who have missed time to due injury, are back. Stapleton started both of this past weekends contests and Miles got a starting nod in Friday’s victory over Charlotte.
HUNTER PROVIDING OFFENSIVE SPARK: Robert Hunter has been Coastal Carolina’s most consistent contributor on offense this year, as he has tallied at least a point in five of the squads six contests (2g, 3a.)
Looking ahead: The Chants will open up their Big South schedule next Sun. Sept., 28 at VMI.
In the pros:
JOSEPH NGWENYA: Ngwenya has started each contest for the Turkish Club Antalyaspor this season, and scored a goal in Antalyaspor’s 1-1 draw of Galatasaray on Saturday.
BOYZZZ KHUMALO: khumalo was signed by D.C. United of the MLS this past Friday, and quickly found himself in the starting lineup in Sunday’s 2-2 draw against FC Dallas. Khumalo, on loan for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL 2nd division, found himself in the scoresheet in his first contest for United, as he assisted a Jaime Moreno goal in the 26th minute. Khumalo played 68 minutes before being taken off for a substitue.
it’s a family affair: If the Chants have a family feeling on this years squad, its because most of them are. The Russell family, from South Elgin, Illinois, includes brother Kyle, Alex, and Joe. The Phelps family, most recently of Charleston, S.C., includes Riley, Gray and Jesy.
