Box Score Volleyball Routs Radford, 3-0

CONWAY, S.C. – Behind nine service aces from sophomore Chelsy Kimes (Munster, Ind./Munster), the Coastal Carolina University volleyball team flew past Radford 3-0 (25-23, 25-6, 25-10) in its first taste of Big South Conference action Sept. 26 at Kimbel Arena. Kimes tallied five aces in the second set, steering the Chanticleers to an 11-5 overall record and 1-0 in conference play.
Playing to a 22-22 tie in the first set, Kimes knocked down a kill to give the advantage to the Chants, but a kill by Radford's Megan McWhorter leveled the match at 23-23. The Chants responded with two quick points taking the first set 25-23.
Kimes owned the second set, posting five aces during a 12-point rally by the Chanticleers as they went ahead 19-2, silencing the Highlanders. Radford managed four more points in the frame, but Coastal Carolina's attack was too fierce as they nabbed the set 25-6.
With a kill by Kimes earning the Chants a 19-10 lead in the third set, the Chanticleers defense did their work while the attack continued its domination to sweep the next six points capturing the set 25-10.
Kimes knocked down 15 kills and hit .478, while sophomore Amanda Russell (Liberty, Ind./Union County) had six kills in the win. Junior Meagan Tracey (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) had a match-high 16 assists and senior Kristin Wolf (Andover, Kan./Central) and junior Jill Nyhof (Alpharetta, Ga./Northview) picked up three blocks each.
Coastal Carolina will be back on the court Sept. 27 when it hosts the 2007 Big South Champion Liberty at 2 p.m.
