COASTAL CAROLINA DEFEATS VMI 3-2 IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME:
The Chants opened up Big South play in need of a victory, and that is exactly what they got on Sunday, downing the Keydets of VMI 3-2 in double overtime. The Chants found themselves trailing 2-0 with 43 minutes left to play, but came back to tie the contest up at 2-2 with a Robert Hunter goal in the 68th minute and a Ross Kelly tally in the 72nd minute.
RECINOS NETS GAME-WINNER IN DOUBLE OT: Freshman Carlos Recinos gave Coastal Carolina the overtime golden goal in the 105th minute, as sent home a shot in the upper left corner from 12 yards out on an assist from Riley Phelps. The goal was Recinos’ second tally of the season, as well as his second game-winner. His first game-winner came against Florida Atlantic in the opening game of the season.
HUNTER’S THREE POINT DAY LEADS CHANTS TO VICTORY: Junior Robert Hunter’s free kick goal in the 67th minute and his assist on Ross Kelly’s goal in the 72nd minute gives Hunter 10 points on the season, which ranks third in the Big South and leads the conference in assists with four. Hunter has either scored or assisted on seven of Coastal Carolina’s nine goals this season.
GOALS A PLENTY:
-Entering Sunday’s contest, the Chants were held scoreless for the last 262 minutes of play, as their last goal game in the 8th minute against Dayton in a 2-1 loss on Sept. 14.
-The three goals marks a season high for Coastal Carolina, eclipsing the previous high of two in the 2-1 overtime victory over Charlotte on Sept. 12.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES: Liberty holds a 4-3 overall record and a 0-2 mark in conference play. The defending 2007 Big South Tournament champion Flames will take on High Point at home on Tuesday before hosting the Chants in Saturday’s contest. Offensively, they are led by Daniel Amoo (4g.) and Joshua Boateng (3g, 1a.)
Looking ahead: The Chants will continue Big South play on Oct. 8 at Gardner-Webb before returning back home to host High Point on Oct. 19.
