More Information:

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Playing through some windy conditions, the Coastal Carolina University men's tennis team did not waste any time getting its first victory of the dual-match season in a thrilling 4-3 win over Campbell Friday, Jan. 30 at the Nesbett Tennis Center. The win marks the Chanticleers' first win in Buies Creek since the 1999 season. The Chants have now won their opening match for the third-straight year and move to 1-0 on the season.      "It was a very competitive match for us," Head Coach Chris Powers remarked. "I liked the adjustments we made in singles due to the weather and we showed a lot of promise on the doubles court too."   In doubles action, junior Ernesto Ramos (Tampico, Mexico/Instituto Andes (Jacksonville)) and senior German Perez (Valencia, Spain/Collegio Helios (UALR)) defeated Campbell's Davy Sum and Jeroen Kuppens 8-2 at the No. 1 spot. The No. 2 position ended with the same result as juniors Plamen Tzvetkov (Herts, United Kingdom/Stanborough) and Dmitry Vlaskin (Moscow, Russia/Moscow 1201 (Arkansas)) handled Loukas Wallart and Ian Kahler 8-2. Coastal Carolina notched the final doubles win as Joseph Withers (Peoria, Ill./Dunlap (Liberty)) and John Hairston (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Myrtle Beach) claimed the victory after Larbi Lamzouri and Beto Mondini were forced to retire.   Vlaskin won his singles match, defeating Wallart 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, while Tzvetkov joined him with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Campbell's Kuppens. Sophomore Dorian Sovic (Zagreb, Croatia/Sportska Gimnazisa (UALR)) got his first victory as a Chanticleer at the No. 6 spot with a 6-0, 6-3 over Campbell's Kahler. Perez got the starting nod at the No. 1 spot in doubles play, but fell to Sum, the 2008 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, 3-6, 7-6. Ramos and Withers suffered two losses in their matches at the No.2 and No. 5 position for the Chants.   "We did what we had to do to get the win today, but we still need to improve on the practice court," Powers continued. "Overall, it's a good start for us but the season is very young."   Coastal Carolina opens its home schedule Tuesday, Feb. 3 when it hosts Coker at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center starting at 1:30 p.m.
