CONWAY, S.C. – Junior Amanda Stull was two rebounds shy of her first career triple-double, helping the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team to a 70-54 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday, Jan. 31 at Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers improve to 11-9 overall and 3-4 in the Big South, while Gardner-Webb drops to 11-10 this season and 3-5 in the league.

 

Stull registered game highs of 15 points and 10 assists, while adding eight rebounds to her stat line and hit her 500th point as a Chanticleer. Sophomore Kate Jasinski was 4-for-4 from three-point range and picked up 14 points in the win. Sophomore Sydnei Moss chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. Gardner-Webb also had three players in double digits with LaTroya Pope and Dominique Hudson scoring 13 points each and Courtney Epps adding 11 points for the Bulldogs.

 

Coastal Carolina jumped out to a 9-8 lead but a triple by Epps gave the Bulldogs their only lead of the game at 11-9 at the 13-minute mark. Jasinski answered with a trey, starting a 10-0 run in helping the Chants pull ahead 19-11 with 9:21 left in the half. Back-to-back triples by sophomore Jessica Noll  pushed the lead to double digits at 25-13 and the frame would end on another three-pointer by freshman Olivia Irick, earning the Chanticleers a 37-24 lead at the break. Coastal Carolina drained 7-of-8 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes to end the half, shooting 87.5 percent from behind the arc.

 

Gardner-Webb started the second frame with a 10-3 run behind seven points from Pope to cut the deficit to six points at 40-34 with 15:57 left on the clock. The Chanticleers scored 10 of the next 15 points, quickly putting an end to the Bulldogs’ momentum at 50-36, with just under 13 minutes to play. Pope would be a force for the Bulldogs helping Gardner-Webb attempt a final comeback by hitting a jumper to trim the Chants’ lead back to eight points at 54-46 at the nine-minute mark. Coastal Carolina jumped back into the driver’s seat with a 12-3 run, giving the Chanticleers their largest lead of the game at 66-49 with 4:12 left to play and Gardner-Webb would not come any closer than 14 points in the final minutes of play.

 

Coastal Carolina had its best shooting performance of the season at 62.7 percent from behind the arc, hitting a season-high 10 triples to outshoot the Bulldogs 45.6 percent to 35.5 percent from the floor. The Chanticleers were 8-of-11 at the free throw line, while Gardner-Webb struggled at the charity stripe going 5-for-17 in the game. Coastal Carolina got 27 points from its reserves and the Bulldogs’ bench had 17 points.

 

The Chanticleers are 7-2 at Kimbel Arena this season and will return to their home court Monday, Feb. 2 for a meeting with Presbyterian. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
