CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team could not overcome a 20-0 run by High Point midway through the game, as the Panthers defeated the Chanticleers 67-66 Monday, Jan. 5 at Kimbel Arena. The Chanticleers had their best shooting performance of the season shooting 47.1 percent from the floor, but High Point topped it making 50 percent of its shots. The loss drops Coastal Carolina to 9-6 overall and 1-1 in the Big South, while High Point moves to 5-9 on the year and 2-0 in the conference.   Junior Kendra Reynolds paced the Chants with a personal-best 17 points and 13 rebounds, for her third career double-double. Reynolds added five assists, two steals and one block. Juniors Amanda Stull and Devin Rivers combined for 21 points, with Rivers netting 11 points and Stull putting 10 on the scoresheet. Sophomore Sydnei Moss recorded 13 points to become the fourth player to hit double-digits for the Chanticleers.   High Point’s Jurica Hargraves poured in a game-high 19 points, while teammates Frances Fields and Andrea Tucker had 11 and 16 points, respectively.   Coastal Carolina jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, but the Panthers quickly erased the deficit and the team’s played to an 11-11 tie, with just under 14 minutes remaining in the half. From that point on, the Chanticleers slowly built a 14-point advantage at 37-23, with 4:44 to go in the half. However, High Point took made a surge as Mackenzie Maier knocked down a triple to spur a 13-0 run by the Panthers. Mackenzie would steal the last three points of the half with an off-balance three, as the Chants could only watch their lead cut to 37-36 at the break.   High Point started the second half the same way, scoring the first seven points to cap a 20-0 run, before Moss finally put an end to the Chanticleers offensive drought. Coastal Carolina did not panic and got right back into the contest as Reynolds powered her way to the basket for two, tying the game at 49-49 with 9:46 left on the clock.   The Chants took their first lead of the half at 8:13, after sophomore Kate Jasinski hit a pull-up jumper to go ahead 53-52. With the scored tied at 63-63 with 1:21 remaining in the game, Tucker grabbed the lead for the Panthers with a layup. Moss was sent to the line where she hit one of two foul shots to trim the deficit to 65-64, with 34 seconds left to play. Coastal Carolina had unintentionally committed a foul, sending Hargaves to the line where she made good on both freebies to pull ahead 67-64. The Chanticleers had 15 seconds to send the game into overtime but managed only two points and fouled High Point with one second on the clock. LaTeisha Dean hit the rim and time expired on the Chants as they dropped their first Big South game of the year.   Coastal Carolina went 17-for-24 from the free throw line, while High Point was 14-of-18 from the line. High Point was 5-of-8 from behind the arc, while Coastal Carolina had 10 attempts but its lone triple of the game came from freshman Olivia Irick.   Coastal Carolina begins a four-game road stretch with Charleston Southern Saturday, Jan. 10 at 5:30. High Point will take to the floor the same day looking for its third-straight victory when they host Radford at 4 p.m.
