CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team defeated Charleston Southern 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-13, 25-15) on Tues., Oct. 13 in its first of three home games this week. The Chanticleers improve to 10-9 and 4-2 in the Big South while the Buccaneers fall to 11-10 and 2-4 in the Big South.
Coastal Carolina came out attacking the net, never hitting below .324 as a team, finishing at .383 for the match, while holding the Buccaneers to .213 for the four sets, including less than .231 in three of the four sets.
Coastal Carolina was led by junior Megan Bickford, who tied her career with eight digs and had a season-high six blocks. Senior Meagan Tracey also had a career and season night registering a career-high eight digs and a season-high 57 assists. Amanda Russell and Sierra Livesay led the Chants with 15 kills each and Livesay recorded her fourth double-double of the season.
Junior Amanda Hill led Charleston Southern with 13 kills and 17 digs. Cori Holeman registered 11 kills, a .688 attack percentage, two service aces, and two blocks while Same Sasan guided the Buccaneers with 36 assists and 10 digs.
The first set stayed close with the Chants holding on to the lead early before Charleston Southern tied the set at 12-all. The Buccaneers would take the lead for two points, but the Chants would go on a 5-0 run to put them up 18-15. Charleston Southern would try to build a comeback with Amanda Hill behind the serving line, but it wouldn't be enough and the Chants would take set one.
In the second set, both teams hit well, but Charleston Southern got the edge hitting .520 as a team compared to Coastal Carolina's .324 team hitting percentage. The Buccaneers took the early lead in the second set, but the Chants would come back to tie the match at 5-all. There would be 11 ties before Charleston Southern would take the final lead at 18-17. The Chanticleers tried to build a comeback but three errors would give stop the attack and tie the match 1-1. With the match tied at 1-1, both teams came out hungry for the conference win.
The third set started where the second set left off, with five ties before the Chanticleers went on a 5-0 run with Livesay at the serving line to put them up 10-6. Coastal Carolina would let Charleston Southern have two points before it went on another 4-0 run with Megan Pollard serving to give them a 15-8 advantage. The Chanticleers were too much to handle as they only allowed Charleston Southern to score five more points before closing out the set for a 2-1 lead in the match.
The fourth set Coastal Carolina would jump out to an early 8-3 lead, but the Buccaneers would not go away bringing the score to within two at 9-7. The Chants then took control of the set and the match with an 11-2 run, led by Jill Nyhof and junior Chelsy Kimes, widening the margin to 21-10. Charleston Southern tried to mount a comeback, but the Chants offense was too much to handle, and Coastal Carolina took the match 3-1.
The Chanticleers continue their three-game homestand on Fri., Oct. 16 as they take on the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. and Charleston Southern returns to action against Liberty on Fri., Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
