RADFORD, Va. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team rallies to defeat Radford 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-22) on Saturday, Oct. 31. The Chants improve to 15-11 overall and 8-4 in the Big South while the Highlanders fall to 12-18 and 2-12 in the Big South.
Junior Chelsy Kimes led the Chants with 23 kills and 14 digs, recording her 13th double-double of the season. Megan Bickford added 13 kills and five blocks while Megan Pollard registered 19 digs. Meagan Tracy and Kelsie Mauck shared the role of setter with Tracey finishing with 21 assists and Mauck tallying 30 assists.
The Highlanders came out early in the first set, going up 7-3 on the Chants. Coastal Carolina came within two points of tying the set at 9-7 and again at 12-10, but a 4-1 Radford run would put the Highlanders up 16-11. The Chanticleers could not get anything started and dropped the first set 25-18.
The second set started better for Coastal Carolina, but Radford still played strong forcing two early ties, before the Chants went on a 6-1 run to take the lead for the first time in the match at 9-4. The Highlanders tried to build a comeback, but another 9-1 Chant run put them up 22-12. Coastal took the second set to tie the match at 1-all.
The third set started similar to the first with Radford going out to a 5-1 lead. The Chants rallied back, but could never regain the lead until they eventually tied the match at 22-all. There would be four more ties with the final tie coming at 26-all. After the 26-26 tie, a kill by Megan Bickford and another by Amanda Russell would give the Chants the advantage and take the 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth set, Radford went out to a 3-1 lead, but Coastal Carolina battled back to tie the set 8-all. The Highlanders would take the next point along with the lead until the Chants forced another tie at 15-15. After five more ties, with the final at 22-all, Coastal took the final lead and took the match 3-1.
The Chanticleers return home for their final two home matches of the season starting with Winthrop on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. followed by Presbyterian on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.
