BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina University volleyball team fell to Gardner-Webb 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 16-25, 16-25) in its final match of the regular season. The Bulldogs improved to 12-21 and 4-12 in the Big South, while the Chanticleers fell to 17-13 overall and 10-6 in the Big South.
Junior Megan Bickford led the Chants with 12 kills and three blocks while Chelsy Kimes had a team-high 11 digs. Both Jill Nyhof and Sierra Livesay finished the match with three blocks and Kelsie Mauck guided the team with 25 assists.
Coastal Carolina was out hit throughout the match, hitting under .200 in three of the four sets. The Chants held the Bulldogs to a .115 team hitting percentage in the second set, but Gardner-Webb would go on to hit over .306 in three of the four sets.
Gardner-Webb started the first set strong, taking a 7-1 lead and forcing Coastal Carolina to take a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Chants gradually diminished the lead to three at 13-10, but 5-2 Bulldog run pushed the lead to 18-12. Gardner-Webb eventually pushed ahead and won the set by five at 25-20.
In the second set, Coastal Carolina came out strong and stayed neck-and-neck with the Bulldogs. There were seven ties throughout the set with the final coming at 14-all. After the final tie, Coastal took the lead and went on a 7-2 run to put it ahead 21-16. Gardner-Webb would score one more point before Coastal took the set and tied the match 1-1.
The Chanticleers came out on the attack in the third set, but Gardner-Webb forced nine ties with the final tie at 14-all. After the final tie, the Bulldogs took the lead and went on a 10-2 run to put them at match point. The Bulldogs take the set on a Jessica Clayton kill and gain the 2-1 match advantage.
In the fourth set, Gardner-Webb went on to an early 5-2 lead, but the Chants would build a 7-0 run to put them up 9-5, forcing the Bulldogs to take a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Gardner-Webb went on a 5-1 run of its own to tie the match at 10-all. There would be one more tie at 11-all before the Bulldogs took the final lead of the set and went on a 9-2 run to lead the Chants 21-14. Gardner-Webb held the Chants to two more points before it won the fourth set and won the match 3-1.
Coastal Carolina heads to Radford, Va. for the Big South Tournament on Nov. 19-21.
