CONWAY, S.C.-Despite a sluggish first half, the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team recovered in the second to defeat Converse 65-47 on Sunday afternoon, December 13 in Kimbel Arena. Coastal improves its winning streak to five, compiling a 7-2 record, while Converse falls to 0-6 on the season.
Amanda Stull started things off for the Chants with a three-pointer that was followed by Converse's Ashley Arff's shot from beyond the arc that started the Valkyries on an 11-3 run that put them up 11-6 with 13:36 left in the first stanza. Stull answered by going on a nine-point run herself, putting the Chants back on top 14-11.
After being down by five points, Arff started a comeback with a lay-in and a trey that gave the Valkyries their second lead of the night. There were five lead changes and two ties before the Chants took a one-point edge going into the half up 27-26.
Seniors Stull and Devin Rivers scored all but four of the Chanticleers' 27 first-half points. Both teams shot under 35 percent from the field in the first half.
Converse came out of the locker room scoring four points to give them a 30-27 lead at 18:24. Sydnei Moss started things off with a jumper for the Chanticleers in the second half that led to a Stull layup and two jumpers from Rivers that propelled the Chants on a 12-0 run, and holding the Valkyries scoreless for nearly five minutes. Coastal pulled away with a 14-0 run and got their biggest lead of the game (55-36) from a Katie Ahaus lay-in with 6:56 left in the game.
Stull, who is ranked number one in the NCAA in three-point field-goal percentage, went 67 percent (4-for-6) from beyond the arc and finished the game with a team-high 17 points. Rivers also posted a career-high 15 points by going 5-for-6 from both the field and the charity stripe.
Katie White grabbed a game-high and season-high nine rebounds and put away five blocks. Coastal's bench outscored the Valkyries reserves 17-11. Coastal shot 40.8 percent from the field, while the Valkyries shot 29.3 percent.
Ashley Arff had a game-high 26 points for Converse. The Valkyries out rebounded the Chanticleers 41-39.
The Chanticleers will head back on the road to take on UNC Wilmington on Tuesday, December 15 at 12 p.m. in Trask Coliseum.
