MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The 18th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (6-1) swept the first day of action at the Baseball at the Beach Tournament at BB&T Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Chanticleers defeated West Virginia (3-3) 15-5 and Tennessee (1-4) 10-5.   Coastal Carolina was down 1-0 after a Justin Ellis run-scoring double in the second, but came back to score six times in the sixth. Senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He moved to second on a single from junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.). Redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) then tripled to left center, scoring two runs for the Chanticleer lead. With two outs, freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) tripled down the left field line. Motter would score on a wild pitch. With two one and two out, sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) doubled home sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) and senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), making it 6-1.    The Mountaineers came back to load the bases with no one out in the sixth. Redshirt senior Kent Altman (Conway, S.C./Conway) replaced freshman Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) and gave up an RBI sacrifice fly to Dan DiBartolomeo and an RBI groundout to Ellis, but West Virginia did no further damage. Coastal Carolina then put up five runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by two-run doubles from Anderson and junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s).   Bortnick had a run-scoring single in the seventh, while freshman Tommy Winegardner’s (St. Leonard, Md./Riverdale Baptist) double and two bases-loaded walks in the eight ended the scored for the Chants.   Meo earned his second win of the season, striking out four and giving up six hits and three runs in five innings. Altman did not allow a hit in two innings of work. Marcus Broadwater took the loss for West Virginia, allowing six hits and six runs in 3.2 innings.   Noel went 4-for-5 with four RBI for Coastal Carolina, while Vince Belnome had two hits and two runs scored.   In the nightcap, Tennessee took a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run from Tyler Horne. Coastal Carolina answered with a Motter RBI single to left and a two-run home run from Bortnick to tie the game at three. The Volunteers plated two in the third on a home run from Kentrail Davis and an RBI single from Cody Brown.   Coastal Carolina would chip away at the Tennessee lead as a single from freshman Dan Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) scored Gilmore, who tripled with one out in the fourth. Then in the fifth, Gilmore scored Iglesias on a unearned run with a single, tying the game at five.   Motter opened the sixth with a solo blast to left field, his first as a Chanticleer. Anderson would then have some two-out magic with a home run to left that scored Woodward. Coastal Carolina added insurance in the eighth as Motter brought home Gilmore on a single and then scored on a fielding error by the Vols.   Junior Caleb Cuevas (Fletcher, N.C./Louisburg J.C.) earned the win in relief for the Chants, pitching a scoreless sixth inning. Sophomore Cody Wheeler (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) pitched the first five innings, striking out seven while allowing eight hits and five runs. For Tennessee, the loss went to Danny Wiltz, who gave up three runs in the sixth. Nick Hernandez gave up seven hits and four earned runs in five innings of work for the Vols.   Motter went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the win, while Gilmore was 4-for-4 with three runs scored. For Tennessee, Davis and Brown had two hits apiece.   NOTE: The Baseball at the Beach schedule has changed for Saturday, Feb. 28. Brown will face West Virginia at 3 p.m., at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field. FIU will face Tennessee the same time at BB&T Coastal Field at 3 p.m.
