COASTAL CAROLINA GEARS UP FOR WEEMS BASKIN RELAYS: The Chanticleers will enter week three of the outdoor season, traveling to Columbia, S.C. Coastal Carolina will take part in the Weems Baskin Relays hosted by the University of South Carolina.
POTTS, ALLICOCK PARTICIPATING IN HEPTATHLON AT WINTHROP/ASICS INVITATIONAL: Coastal Carolina will send a pair of athletes to Rock Hill, S.C., in sophomore Kandisa Allicock and freshman Ashley Potts. The duo will be competing at the Winthrop/Asics Invitational March 28-30 in the heptathlon.
SLATED TO COMPETE: Coastal Carolina will enter 31 athletes in the meet that features the full Chanticleer squad in their regular events for the first time this season. All healthy athletes will be competing in at the meet in 14 events, including the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. After taking part primarily in relays at the Shamrock Invitational, sprinters Amber White, Ikeiylah Brown, LeAuna Sistrunk and Darriale Henley will participate in individual events for the first time of the outdoor season.
RELAYS REEL IN SEVERAL OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES: The foursome of Amber White, Ikeiylah Brown, LeAuna Sistrunk and Darriale Henley had themselves an outstanding weekend at the Shamrock Invite. On Friday, the quartet turned in a time of 1:38.46 to take second in the 4x200m relay. Friday saw the group win the 4x100m relay, defeating the likes of South Carolina, Maryland and the defending NCAA D II Champion St. Augustine with a time of 46.82. Later in the day, the standout relay squad ran a 3:50.64 to place third in the 4x400m.
MATTERN PICKS UP FIRST INDIVIDUAL TITLE OF SEASON: Redshirt sophomore Deb Mattern continued her early season success in the javelin, taking the top overall finish in the Shamrock Invitational with a throw of 137'2”.
DISTANCE RUNNERS TURN IN SOLID OUTINGS AT SHAMROCK: In the 3,000-meters, sophomores Shelby Donahue and Maranie Staab excelled in the race. Donahue earned a second place finish in the race with a time of 10:15.92, while Staab clocked a time of 10:18.19 to take fourth.
CONNOR EARNS PAIR OF TOP FIVE FINISHES IN THROWS: Sophomore Brittany Connor started out and ended her Shamrock Invitational on a high note. On Friday in the hammer throw, she placed fourth with a toss of 157'5”. The Greenwood, S.C. native then followed up her fourth place finish with a third place mark on day two in the discus with a throw of 144'6”.
MATTERN, LUPO EXCEL IN JAVELIN AT ASICS INVITATIONAL: Deb Mattern took home the top collegiate performance in the javelin with a throw of 138'2” in the sophomore's first meet of the season. Another sophomore, Caitlin Lupo also placed in the top five with a fourth-place finish with a toss of 125'2”.
VEITCH CONTINUES EARLY SEASON SUCCES: After a solid indoor season, senior Marcie Veitch is well on her way to a solid outdoor season. Her quest for back-to-back All-Big South honors began at last weekend's Coastal Carolina/Asics Invitational with a second-place finish in the pole vault. The Tecumeseh, Ontario native cleread 10'6”.
CRAWFORD HITS PERSONAL BEST IN TRIPLE JUMP: Freshman Kristen Crawford opened up her outdoor career with a solid performance in the triple jump, placing second with a leap of 37'4.5”.
CHANTS LOOK TO REPEAT, TAKE TRIPLE CROWN: Coastal Carolina will look to defend its 2008 Big South Outdoor title, as well as continue the streak of winning Big South Championships. Coastal Carolina has won the last four championships, dating back to the 2008 indoor title. The Chants will look to win the “triple crown” of championships by defending their title from a year ago, as they have won the team cross country and indoor titles already this season. Coastal Carolina has won four out of the last five outdoor titles.
CHANTICLEERS RETURN INDIVIDUAL CHAMPION, 12 ALL-BIG SOUTH PERFORMERS: Senior LeAuna Sistrunk will return for her final outdoor season to defend her 2008 title in the 100-meter hurdles. Although Coastal Carolina loses four champions from a year ago, the team returns sprinters Ikeiylah Brown, and Vondeeshia Humphries who earned All Conference honors a year ago. The Chants will also be strong in the field events, as they return thrower Brittany Connor, who was All-Big South in the discus and hammer is also back. Also back are javelin throwers Deb Mattern and Caitlin Lupo, senior pole vaulter Marcie Veitch, as well as Kandisa Allicock (high jump) and Sierrah Oates (long jump) who all earned All-Big South accolades last season are also back to aid the hunt for back-to-back team titles.
