HONOLULU, Hawai’i – The 15^th-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (19-6) was swept in a doubleheader March 27 by Hawai’i (15-9) in Honolulu, Hawai’i. The Rainbows won the first game 5-4 on a walk-off hit by pitch to Kevin Macdonald with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. In the nightcap, the Rainbows scored multiple runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings to defeat the Chanticleers 7-1.   In game one, Coastal Carolina struck first in the second. Freshman Tommy Winegardner (St. Leonard’s, Md./Riverdale Baptist) walked with one out.  He would score on a double by classmate Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) in the gap in left field. Freshman Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens) and sophomore Scott Woodward (Markle, Ind./Norwell) then hit back-to-back infield singles, with Woodward’s knock scoring Bowman, making it 2-0 Chants. Hawai’i had its first hits of the series in the second, scoring a run off Coastal Carolina starter Anthony Meo (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West). Meo struck out Kevin Macdonald and got Kolten Wong to fly out, but then gave up a double to center by Landon Hernandez and a run-scoring single from Jeffrey Van Doornum, cutting the Chant lead to 2-1.   Coastal Carolina got the run back in the third inning. Using a little two-out magic, Winegardner singled and scored on double in the right field gap by junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s). Hawai’i would then cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Bryan Morford led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error from senior Tyler Bortnick (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor).. Morford scored on a single up the middle from Christian Johnson.   Hawai’i tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring a run off freshman TJ Swank (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prarie Ridge). Wong singled with one out and moved to second on a Hernandez single. Wong would then score on a Swank wild pitch, making it 3-3.   The Chanticleers retook the lead in the seventh.   Sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) led off the inning with a single to center. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bortnick and scored on a double down the right field line by junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.).   In the ninth, Winegardner struck out Bryan Morford to open the inning, but walked Johnson and Greg Garcia. Bryan Roquemore then singled to right center field to score Johnson. The Chants intentionally walked Vince Catricala to get to Macdonald. Winegardner then hit Macdonald on the first pitch, giving the Rainbows the walk-off win.   Motter and Woodward both went 3-for-4 on the game, while Noel had two hits. For Hawai’I, Roquemore, Wong, Landon Hernandez and Morford had two hits apiece.   Sam Spangler earned the win for the Rainbows. He pitched the final 2.2 innings, striking out a pair and giving up two hits. Winegardner was tagged with his first home run of the season. Meo went the first five innings, giving up six hits and an earned run with four strikeouts.  Rein went two innings, allowing just a hit and a walk. Hawaii’s starter Jared Alexander allowed eight hits and three runs in four innings of work.   Hawai’i scored two unearned runs in the second inning of the second game.  Wong hit a one-out single and then stole second. Wong moved to third on a groundout and scored as Morford’s chopper was mishandled by Motter. Johnson then singled to center field to score Morford, giving the Rainbows a 2-0 lead.    Hawai’i took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Johnson singled to lead off the inning. After a batter’s interference call got the first out, Garcia singled to right. Roquemore sacrificed both runners over and Catricala drove them in with a two-run double to left. Macdonald then singled to left to score Catricala.   Coastal Carolina scored its first run in the sixth as a Noel single and Bortnick double brought in a run, but Rainbow reliever Lenny Linsky retired the next three Chants to end the rally.   The Rainbows added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Hernandez led off the inning with a single and then moved to third on a ground-rule double from Morford. Senior Kent Altman (Conway, S.C./Conway) got the next two Rainbows out, but redshirt sophomore Jim Birmingham (Pine Hill, N.J./Penn) walked Garcia and gave up an infield single to Roquemore, making it 6-1 Hawai’i. Freshman Brad Goldberg (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) then walked Catricala with the bases loaded, giving the Rainbows the 7-1 advantage.   Bowman was 2-for-3 in the loss, while Wong and Johnson had two hits apiece for Hawai’i. Catricala added three runs-batted-in for the Rainbows.   Senior Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill) took the loss. He gave up seven hits, three earned runs and struck out a pair. Matt Sisto earned the win for the Rainbows, giving up eight hits and a run in five-plus innings of work.   The two teams will wrap up the four-game series Saturday, March 28 at 12:05 p.m. HST (6:05 p.m. EDT).
