MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The 22nd-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (32-13) fell to the College of Charleston (27-16) 13-7 April 28 in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The Cougars took all three games against the Chanticleers in the midweek series. The College of Charleston scored nine runs in the bottom of the second inning to catapult them to the victory.   The College of Charleston scored a run in the bottom of the first. Redshirt freshman Keith Hessler (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) walked Joey Bergman with one out.  Bergman stole second and would score on a single to left field by Joash Brodin.   The Chanticleers countered with a run in the second. Freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) hit a ball over Matt Mansilla’s head in center field for a triple. Bowman would score on a sacrifice fly to right by classmate Taylor Motter (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens).    The Cougars exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the second. Mansilla opened with a double. With one out, Cole Rakar hit a Texas League double to left to put two runners on. Austin Morgan scored a pair with a double. Hessler walked Clay McCord and gave up singles to Bergman and Brandon Sizemore to make it 5-1 Cougars. With two outs, Ryan Daniels was hit by a pitch and Mansilla brought in a pair with a single. Freshman Brad Goldberg (Beachwood, Ohio/Beachwood) came in and walked Kolby Epley and Cole Rakar to bring in a run. The College of Charleston brought in the ninth run of the inning as Morgan drove in a pair with a single to right, taking a 10-1 lead.   Coastal Carolina got a run back in the third as junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.) singled home sophomore Rico Noel (Lawton, Okla./Lawton), who reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second.    The Chanticleers clawed back into the game in the fourth, scoring four runs. Bowman reached on an error to start the inning. Junior Jose Iglesias (Miami, Fla./St. John’s) hit his eighth home run of the season, a towering shot to left center field. Redshirt junior Chance Gilmore (Surfside Beach, S.C./Virginia) then hit a 1-0 pitch to the woods in right field for his sixth home run of the season. Freshman Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) singled, then moved to third on a failed pickoff and scored on a Rice double, making it 10-6 CofC.   The Cougars tacked on two runs in the fifth. Bergman led off the inning with a single, and then moved to third on a bad-hop double by Sizemore. Brodin brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to left and Sizemore would score on a single by Mansilla, making it 12-6 Cougars.   Senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) hit a leadoff home run just right of the batters eye in center field to cut the Cougar lead to 12-7. It was Anderson’s 16th home run of the year and 45th in his Coastal Carolina career, tying him with Mike Costanzo for second on both the Chanticleer and Big South career home run lists.   The Cougars added a run in the eighth as Rakar doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by McCord.   Curtis Dowling earned the win for the Cougars, pitching four innings of relief and allowing just three hits and one run with four strikeouts. Hessler was tagged with the loss, allowing nine runs and seven hits in 1.2 innings.   Rice, Iglesias, Gilmore and Davis had two hits apiece for the Chants. For the College of Charleston, Sizemore was 4-for-5 while Morgan drove in four runs.   The Chanticleers open a 10-game homestand Wednesday, April 29 against Wake Forest. First pitch is at 6 p.m., at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
