More Information:

CONWAY, S.C. – Junior Nick McCully (Lakeland, Fla./Santa Fe Catholic) threw a solid 8.1 innings on the mound and senior David Anderson (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) hit his 18th home run of the season as the 22nd-ranked Coastal Carolina University baseball team (35-13, 14-5 Big South) defeated Liberty (29-16, 16-6 Big South) 4-1 May 2 in Conway, S.C. With the win, Coastal Carolina has taken the first two games of the three-game Big South series.   McCully struck out five and scattered six hits in earning his fourth win of the season. It also was the longest outing of his Coastal Carolina career. The biggest threat the Flames had until the ninth inning was in the first. Matt Williams doubled on McCully’s first pitch of the game. McCully would get Curran Redal to pop out, Doug Bream to strike out and Errol Hollinger to ground out to end the threat. He had 1-2-3 innings in the second, the third and the eighth.   Anderson now has moved to within one home run of tying Tom Romano for the career round tripper record. His 47th career home run was a shot to center field on a 0-1 pitch by Shawn Teufel. It was set up by walks to freshman Steve Davis (Steubenville, Ohio/Steubenville) and junior Adam Rice (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Elgin C.C.).    The Chanticleers added insurance in the sixth as infield singles from freshman Daniel Bowman (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) and Davis led to a run.   In the ninth, McCully would get Redal to fly out, but gave up a single to Doug Bream and a double to Hollinger. Senior Bobby Gagg (Hamburg, N.J./Wallkill) came in and got Cody Brown to ground out, which scored pinch runner Casey Brown. Gagg struck out Tyler Bream to end it and give him his first career save as a Chanticleer.   Six different Chanticleers had hits in the game, while Anderson drove in three runs. For Liberty, Williams and Doug Bream had two hits apiece.   Teufel was tagged with the loss despite striking out nine. He gave up five hits and four runs with five walks in seven innings.   The two teams will wrap up the three-game series Sunday, May 3 at 2 p.m., in Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field.
